Workbench 3.x will run on any Amiga.
(Even a modified A1000)
3.0 and 3.1 will run fine on a 2000..
I haven't used 3.5/3.9, and they should run, but I'm not sure if they might be sluggish or not (wanting more CPU/RAM depending on your 2000 setup).  I've heard people say both...

But there's no AGA requirement for 3.x.

p.s.  This implies you have upgraded upgraded your Kickstart ROM also..
Amiga 1200 w/ ACA1230/28 - 4G CF, MAS Player, ext floppy, and 1084S.
Amiga 500 w/ 2M CHIP and 8M FAST RAM, DCTV, AEHD floppy, and 1084S.
Amiga 1000 w/ 4M FAST RAM, DUAL CF hard drives, external floppy.

You WILL need a 3.0 or 3.1 Kickstart ROM chip though. (Unless you softkick Kickstart 3.0 or 3.1).

Sorry som99

The A2000 can run 3.1 without any problem but you need kickstart 3.x.

Technically, you can't run 3.0 on an A2000 since 3.0 ROMs were never made available. But you can do 3.1 :)

3.5 and 3.9 require an 020 accelerator and some Fast RAM.

I was adding my p.s. as everyone else was posting about the kickstart.  Yeah, you need a kickstart ROM.   ;-)

Workbench 3.1 requires at least 2 MB of Fast Ram to perform properly.
I used to run it with 4 MB of Fast Ram and a 1 MB of Chip Ram on my Enhanced A1000 w Rejuvinator board and KS 3.1 Rom.

I hadn't heard that before and I haven't been able to find any "requirements" listings online.
I only ever used it on my 1200..

What's your definition of "properly?"
From what I can tell, 3.1 appears to be a pretty minor change from 3.0...

Using ClassicWB lite and not using the extra stuff and picking wb 1.3 theme plus using 4 color mode and it will run OK on 1MB ECS machines.
Edit: Ive tried it myself so I know it works fine.

I run 3.1, 3.5, and 3.9 on my A2000.  I have and 030 accelerator, 8mb of fast ram, and 3.1 ROM.  It has ECS.  I don't know about a standard, unaccelerated 2000.  Try it and see. :)

No sense trying. It will NOT work! 3.5 & 3.9 require at least an '020 CPU.
I have an A2000 with an '030 that I run 3.5 on. 3.9 runs to slow, and hogs way to much memory. This is a great setup for the A2000/2000HD
As other's have stated, there was no 3.0 KS ever made for the A2000, only 3.1, but that works out fine.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse

Only a fraction of 3.5 and 3.9 really requires 68020, all really important updates since 3.1 runs just fine on 68000 as well. I know this since I put together OS 3.9 for my minimig that only has a 68000.

If you have enough ram then you can use mkick to soft load a kickstart 3.1 image. It's not going to be legal, but it is possible.

Back in the day, I ran kickstart 2.05 and 3.0 on my a500 using a blizzard turbo board that allowed loading images from disk. With no real problems.

I switched to mkick when I got a hard drive that didn't work with the blizzard board. I bought a 3.1 upgrade when they became available.

I've tried WB3.1 with 1 meg...

it ran out of ram opening a window/folder?

you might get away with 1 meg if you just want to use it as a clock?
