New Mediator doesn't work
« on: July 20, 2012, 08:56:17 AM »
Hi all,

I've bought a new Mediator 4000Di from Elbox some months ago. I've sent it back to Elbox once and got it back one month later "repaired". But it still does not work, and elbox does not answere anymore. The current problem is that when I double click the Radeon monitor the system freezes. Yesterday I saw before that a strange behavior, negative or zero amount of chip mem in the workbench menu bar. I'm glad that after a long discussion and the repair of the card the Mediator recognizes my Radeon 9200 correctly (as far as I know):

PciInfo report:

Pci Device 1:
   VendorID: $1002
VendorName: ATI Technologies Inc. / Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
   DeviceID: $5c61
   DeviceName: bk-ati ver008.016m.085.006 Mobility Radeon 9200
   ClassCode: $30000
   RevisionID: $1
   InterruptPin: 3
   SubsystemVendorID: $1
   SubsystemID: $1
   MemSpace0: $60000000 - $6fffffff
   IOSpace1: $40c06000 - $40c060ff
   MemSpace2: $70000000 - $7000ffff
   RomSpace: $70020000 - $7003ffff

But maybe someone can help me to get if fully working? Seems elbox gave it up.

Btw: OS4 even does not boot.

Hi what type of radeon is it ie Saphire or other make,is it the dual voltage version,ie 5v,3v version, sounds like the radeon is the problrm, do ther pci cards work in the mediator then its narrows it down to the Radeon you are using.try posting this on the hyperion classic forums as there you get some good answer there to help you with the problem.

It's a 5V version which I've bought together with the mediator from Elbox. A pci 100 mbit/s network card does also not work. It's a 8039 rtl.

Well for one thing do not use slot one (1) for the video card -- I assume you mean the slot next to the "bridge board." The standard recommendation is slot 2, use the first slot for the Ethernet card. Secondly make sure you are using the most recent drivers; the pci.library should be at least 9.7 (10.0 can be downloaded from their beta directory).  There is a beta Radeon.card, but I can't tell you what versions they all are from my iPhone. Are you using the MMCD 2.1?

For problems with OS 4.1 go to Hyperion's Classic forum and there is a ton of info on installing OS 4.1, compatability of hardware (a BIG problem), and what to try to get it installed. There is a lot of information in those posts.

If you can't get the most recent Mediator files, then pm me with your email address and I will send them to you

Hello
Sad to here that you are having problems with the mediator, but looking at the card info, its a card with a moblie gfx chip and some of these cards don,t work at all or just show garbage on the screen. it Looks like the radeon is the problem.

Narrow it down take radeon out, try another pci card,ie ethernet card ie 8029 or sata sii3112,3114 that doesnt need dma, voodoo gfx card if you have one,if they work then its not the mediator, causing the problem.

I had the same problem and it was the radeon with mobile chip,it could also be that it needs the 5v hack to get it working,or just get one of the old saphire 9250 cards they normally work with out the voltage hack, was lucky to pick one up off ebay.Really cheap for 14 euros works a dream.

Good Luck
        Regards Laurence

Civic, I believe that if you bought the Radeon card from Elbox or Amigakit, it should work; however if you got it somewhere else it will work or not, but I believe that clicking on the monitor icon and it crashing has nothing to do with the card, I believe it a driver issue as the card isn't really accessed by clicking on the monitor, but rather setting the screen mode were the card is activated would cause a crash. Make sure you have only the standard monitor (PAL/NTSC) in the directory with the Radeon monitor.  To me, that is a software problem (drivers and ENV settings).  My first install acted that way; it crashed on doing anything and later every time I opened a window it froze and had to be rebooted.

Elbox may make and sell these things, but they don't support them after the sale; you have to get support elsewhere

P.S., the sii3112/4 SATA boards only work under OS 4.1; Elbox didn't write the drivers for 4.1, Hyperion did and they decided what to support based on expense and DMA issues

Maybe your old PSU is now not strong enough...

It is unlikely that the power supply is under powered as a Toaster 4000 and TBC cards plus accelerator runs fine on other A4000D's; the RTL8039 requires some PCI ram to function and it borrows from the graphic card.

That would explain why the RTL8039 does not work, as the gfx does not work ;-)
Ok thanks for all the hints, I will try them out. Or maybe someone has another one?

Another hint: pm me your address and I'll send you current drivers as attachment. If your Radeon is not from Elbox or Amigakit, there is no way of knowing if it's ROM is compatible or not; you can get the same beautiful picture with a Voodoo3 3000, just not the ram (which is only good in OS 3.x, not OS 4.1).

I had a similar issue with OS3.9.    Had to go though a lot of steps to get it working.    My cards are arranged in this order.

Slot 4...Radeon
Slot 3...Spider
slot 2...FastEthernet
slot 1...Sb128

had to update to mmc 2.1 then run the setup tool incuded with 2.1.
Then I had to also create the screen modes in picasso96 (this info is in the read me files).   Had more fun getting the spider and fastethernet working.

I hope this helps.
Amiga 4000D, OS3.9, GVP 040, Mediator, Radeon 9250, Spider 2, 8GB CF.
Amiga 3000D OS2.04, 030/25Mhz 16MB, 1.5GB SCSI HD
Amiga 2000 OS3.1.4, 030/25Mhz, 6MB, 4GB CF Buddha, Opailvision, A2088.
Amiga 500 and 1000 stock.

TenWheeler: "Stay Close to the Candles... the Stairway Can Be Treacherous"

The Video card install does take quite a few steps that at first make no sense, which is why either one has to find an explicit post on the subject, or get it wrong two or three times, so that after a dozen or more times you can guide someone else through it.  That someone, I'm afraid will not be Elbox.  I've installed the software on my 2 A4000T's so often It actually makes (a perverse and morbid) sense.  I feel for those folks who, like me, first looked at the Elbox instructions and said, "WTF?"  THe Ethernet software takes sometime (especially with AmiTCP) to get working, but the spider card is easier.  The sound card can be a bit of trouble.  Luckily in OS 4.1 for Classics, Hyperion wrote their own drivers, and everything that is SUPPORTED works like a charm; ever wonder why OS 4.1 supports SATA cards and sound cards that Elbox doesn't?  THe Hyperion guys first supported as many diverse video cards they could, and then picked out the most generic, inexpensive PCI cards they could.  The only issue is that the OS 4.1 only supports DMA on the CSPPC SCSI bus; all other DMA cards need not apply -- these include other SCSI cards, USB cards, and the like.  If the hardware supports PIO, then thats how they picked them -- i.e., Deneb has a DMA driver (cool in OS 3.x), but in OS 4.1 it uses a PIO driver.

Elbox has a "beta" pci.library (version 10.0) that is said to help some (poorly chosen) Radeon Cards work in OS 4.1, but I've tried it and it does not help with the spider, SB128, or RTL8039, but it does interfere with the  sii3114ide.device from "seeing" attached hard drives.

For ciVic, anything that tries to insert code into the kickstart kernel at boot time will kill OS 4.1; hence the FastATA 4000, Deneb with any ROM code, Buddah IDE card, etc will prevent OS 4.1 from booting.  That is why the OS 4.1 hardware compatability list is gospel.

Wow, this went off topic.

I tried it out now, but even the newest driver does not help. I even saw negative values for chip and fast mem before it freezed. What would be the cheapest pci card to test the Mediator (since I only have the gfx and network card which only works if the gfx card works)?

Pls post your complete setup (Zorro-Cards) CPU-Card and memory-setup.
Best setup is to jumper the mediator like:
PCI-Space first $40000000 -
PCI-Memory 512MB
Mediator-Config $60000000 -
BR
Ratte

btw. latest pci.lib i have is 9.7 ... any sources for 10.0 or newer ?!
