Networking with Mediator and Win XP
« on: January 19, 2004, 09:03:56 AM »
All,

Am looking for some practical advice on networking my Mediatored A1200 to my Win XP box.

Am totally new to this so I'd be grateful if someone could explain how to do this in words of one syllable :-D

So far I've got 10/100 Network cards in both machines, a patch cable, Miami DX on the Amiga side and of course XP Pro installed on the PC.

What other programs will I need in order to file share between the two?  I've accumulated so much stuff on the Amiga side and my ISP only seems to be able to talk to the PC...

You should download and install samba on amiga, 2.0.7 is a good version of samba.

Just follow the manual on the webb page.

It should not be so hard, good luck!

Samba if you want to share drives, but you can share your internet connection through the xp pro machine as well.
How is your xp machine connecting to the internet ?

Dial up
Ethernet to Broadband
USB to Broadband
Or some routing device ?

If it Ethernet to broadband or ethernet to a router you want a second network card or plug your amiga into the router.

If its the first then, on the network card thats spare in the pc plug in a "cross over" cable to the network card in the amiga.
Enable internet sharing option in xp for the this network interface.
Run Miami Init again on the Amiga.

You can now also ftp files between the machines if you want.

Thanks for that guys.

Is Samba easy to use?  Can I access the PC's drives via Samba when using something like Directory Opus or something?

My XP machine is connected to the net via dailup, as I live out in the sticks and we're still using coke cans and bits of string for long distance communication :-D

Also, can I use an FTP solution on the XP box to access my Amiga drives?

Samba is automaticly started when you start MiamiDX.

You can use a programmed called nmbd, I think you can download it from sambas webbpage.
It will talk to samba and act as a device, you can surf through your entire pc with that program.
You need to stop deficon if you have os3.9 or 3.5.

And samba should be easy to install, all is there on that webbpage.

It has non installation for winxp but it should be the same as install it on win2k and win2k is about the same as installing it on win98.

Some experience is required but no expert is needed to install samba and get it to work.

If you need to have the amiga online but can't du to the router or what ever.
You can use the pc as a router:

With two network cards and a program, can't recall any names but you should find some programs that does the job if you search.

you can still set up internet connection sharing with xp and dial up, its the same as if u had all the other combos

u just enable internet sharing on the dial up connection.

u then need to set up miami on miggy side to run across the network, dont know how to do that on the miggy, but shouldnt be too hard
