E-Uae on Linux Netbook
« on: June 27, 2012, 09:55:02 AM »
Hi All

Have got some time off work and thought I'd finally crack getting a netbook to boot off USb stick into Amiga Workbench.  I was considering Amiga Forever when I found the ive version of Amigasys.  This has installed ok and after a bit of fiddling with the config file I can get it to boot directly to Workbench and run stuff.  Problem is that the speed is all over the place - sometime it's incredibly quick and other times it's as slow as a standard A1200!  have played around with memory settings and Jit seetings but nothing seems to make a difference.

Have also tried on a high power laptop and get the same issues.

Any suggestions as it works (almost) but I do need the speed..

I don't know how the linux version works, but in WinUAE you get a big speed increase if you use Picasso96 and the special UAE version of the RTG graphics driver.  It's the emulation of the classic AGA and ECS chipsets that take a toll on emulation speed.
Music I've made using Amigas and other retro-instruments: http://theovoids.bandcamp.com

I've gotten mine to work ok under Ubuntu 11.04 (Ecrap er.. E-Machines 250G), and have the same thing happen as previously posted (RTG vs. Native). The frameskip helps alot, though its a compromise between updates and playability for games and such (I get robbed alot playing Pinball Fantasies ALOT that way, even more frustrating when my nice wide-screen LCD TV with VGA input can't sync to PAL refresh rates, and I'm limited to emulation to see anything on the bottom of the screen for s/w written in Europe). The audio also kills things alot, aside from AHI stuff. Win-UAE seems to work well on the wifes setup, aside from native audio getting garbled alot.
Anyway, don't know if this'll help, but I'll C&P my .uaerc file (Ubuntu).

Thanks that's really helpful - will have a play later. I do wonder if e-uae struggles generally. Have never had similar issues with winuae on the same system. Using Ab3d2 as my benchmark.

Forgot to mention that read somewhere that if you specify more than 32mb z3 memory then this slows the emulation down.

Yeah, its on the website somewhere. I've tried 32mb z3, and 128mb, and I haven't really noticed any slowdown. Though I only use it casually (and whenever I need to do Amiga stuff when my wife wants me in the living room to watch some stupid movie). My biggest problem so far has been the key mapping, which disables the arrow keys (among a few others, including the keypad, which wouldn't seem like a prob on a netbook but for the USB keypad I use with it), but I think there's some sort of config file for that, too.

If you want to use Amiga under Linux use FS-UAE : http://fengestad.no/wp/fs-uae/download-beta

Fast/Stable and based on P-UAE/WinUAE code :)

I thought FS-UAE didn't do JIT which slowed it down?
