Can't boot from dvd on Macmini.
« on: June 16, 2012, 03:45:17 AM »
OK i give up. Why can't i boot from a dvd? I have tried holding down c then d and then command+option+shift+delete and nothing happens. What am i doing wrong?

The keyboard works fine and i never had any trouble before booting it up from a dvd. I have also tried dvds that previously worked and they are showing on the Ambient desktop as they should be but they won't boot either. So what's going on? Any ideas?
Even my cat doesn\'t like me.

OK, holding d will only direct the boot call to your hard drive and command+option+shift+delete works for older Macs, so holding c down should force the the CD/DVD to boot with a viable boot disc.  Have you tried holding down the OPTION key during startup? By doing so you will get the Startup Manager which will have all the available volumes including CD/DVD volumes.  Select the DVD volume and boot from there.  Hope that helps.

Thanks but it didn't work. Pushing c and d have never worked but holding down command+shift+option+delete has worked in the past. I tried the option key but failed to get the startup manager. Maybe it's my keyboard in that the mini is being fussy?

Tried holding down the left ALT key from cold boot?

Kesa,

I've had an issue like thison my Mac Mini. I couldn't get it to boot from the ISO disk and thus couldn't install Morphos. There was nothing apparently wrong with the hardware or the ISO disk. I even had a couple of email exchanges with the guy who sold me the Mini on ebay and he said the machine had always worked fine for him.

Nonetheless, I fixed the problem by replacing the drive. I had a spare from another dead Mac Mini.

Yep. Today i have restarted my macmini probably 100 times trying every keyboard combination i could think of. Nothing seems to work. But thanks anyway :)

Thanks but i think i would prefer the less extreme option. I'm sure it's just something simple like my mini doesn't like my wireless logitech keyboard for some reason. The irony is i actually have an apple keyboard but it is bluetooth so it takes a few seconds too long to switch on to be useful when booting. Bloody apples!

Holding down option will list whatever boot options are available and allow you to select, but I've noticed it's not reliable from a wireless keyboard, I keep an old style wired keyboard to use when I need access to firmware....

Well i have a small problem also when trying to boot morphos 3.0 cd for a try or install.... when on the boot screen selection drive, i´m not able to select the morphos cd, which is next to the osx drive with a selected sign. I press the mouse button on the morphos icon and nothing happens, after a while a line command screen pops up.... any one have a tip to solve this? THANKS

I had a similar issue on an iMac and the root cause for me was the wireless keyboard.  It seems that the keyboard was not fully recognized in time to interrupt the boot sequence.   I found a wired mac keyboard and the option key method worked just fine.
Best of luck.

"Mac mini:

 • Turn on the Mac mini.
 •
 •  In order to eject a previously inserted disc from your optical drive,  press and hold your left mouse button during the reboot or power on  process.
 •
 • Insert the MorphOS CD immediately while holding the 'C' key.
 •
 • If the mini doesn't boot MorphOS or it has already booted another operating system,                                     reboot and press and hold the 'C' key immediately after the welcome chime.                                     Alternatively you can press and hold the Alt key to get the mini's boot menu.
 •
 • MorphOS will now start booting. Once it is done booting, follow the on screen

                                    instructions."
Taken from MorphOS website for booting OS install.  Give them a try.

I agree with the poster who mentioned wireless keyboards and timely key functions on the Mac's, I would suggest using a wired keyboard (USB of course) as it maybe a bit better at signaling the key call.  Also, I have had to replace a DVD drive in my Mac Mini.  Opening these machines up is no fun.:furious:

I was here with Cammy when she was trying to boot up and install MorphOS 3.0 and Ubuntu 10.04 on her MacMini and PowerBook. Neither of them would finish booting either OS, even after we cleaned the lenses in the CD drives. They were still able to play music CDs and read files from CDs in OSX.

In any case, she ended up installing MorphOS from a USB stick with a custom boot.img file. Installed lightning fast from that too.
Amiga user forever.
