So people - do you want an Amiga-only BBS?
« on: January 15, 2004, 01:47:33 PM »
My most memorable computing days were when I ran a small dial-up BBS on my Amiga 1200, back in the mid-nineties.

Out of nostalgia I downloaded the old BBS package again over the weekend, and the idea of setting up another Amiga-only BBS - but this time with multi-telnet nodes - hit me. I messed about for a couple of hours and got it working with telnet.

Before I commit considerably more time, effort and money to the project, is there anyone who would want to "call" it? It would have the usual message facilities, file downloads, door games, walls to scrawl on etc. etc. As for the choice of BBS software it of course has to be Max's (although Pro 2, rather than the original 1.54).

Well?

Forgive my ignorance, but wouldn't this involve dialling a number, therefore involving extra expense for all those who have unlimited access internet connections?

There's a thread here about Amiga BBS's. As far as I can tell you're looking at extreme minority interest here...

I  would love o get on another AMiga BBS. I still visit a few of them, but they are in Germany. FAME is a nice BBS app that I think is free. Its got lots of great doors and script support. I ran a large BBS using AmiExpress back in the early days for several years. I'm sad to say it was warez related, but man I met some cool people from running it. SkidRow USHQ then CrystalHQ for a short time too.

That's the response I was after!! :)

I've checked around some telnet bbs's and they seem quite active. Obviously, telnet is the key! This means (to the poster above) that you don't RING, you TELNET - over the internet. It appears exactly the same, it's just free.

Right, I think i'll go ahead then. Now where did I put that ANSI editor...

I *love* BBS's.  Here in Dallas there are about ten left.  Just about two weeks ago we lost the "Star Streams" BBS, which means that I lost access to my favorite online game "Iron Gate II".  I played that a lot on a BBS in Guam.

Anyone know of any good telnet BBS's?  I have my Amiga working with DSL now.  Yahhh....

As for here in Dallas, there is one Commodore support BBS left:

Marsden BBS:  (972) 276-6721

The whole BBS list is at...

Oh right! Cool!
I always remember reading about BBS back in the day, but being only a kid at the time, and not being able to afford a modem (in any case I wouldn't have been able to persuade my folks to let me use the phone), they were always a thing of wonder. I for one am very interested in the idea.

Here's an online BBS list I found, I'm sure there are others, perhaps you could upload your board to the list?

Update on the BBS front...
--------------------------

The board is getting close to completion, mains menus are done, most doors are working, seems fine over telnet etc. etc. I'm planning for a switch on date later in the week - probably Friday.

Hopefully they'll let me post a news story about it just before it goes online.

See you there!
