Must-have software/tools/utilities for OS3.1?
« on: April 26, 2012, 10:39:01 PM »
Well, now that I've got my A1200 all juiced up with a new CF HD, (thank you AmigaKit!), and got it running nicely on a M1438s monitor, and nicked the Blizzard 060 from the tower, :)  I need to turn my attention to software to occupy that lovely storage space.  I have just ordered WHDLoad, and amongst all the other goodies that came with the monitor, was a nice boxed copy of Dopus5.5, which I have installed.  What is a good media player?  I have cd's full of MODs I will transfer over, there was a player I really liked back when I had my original Amiga, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. What are some programs that you just can't get by without?

I use Delitracker for my mods. Make sure you get LhA, There is a good article here on getting the most out of WB 3.1. Search for it!

EgalePlayer is also a good choice. Loads of plugins.

I like Ed Player on my Minimig 1.1 but it is really works best on ECS machines.

For must have tools I'd say
Cygnus Editor,
Hamlab+
Personal Paint
AmiTradeCenter
Samba
ShapeShifter

Hamlab+
Hamlab+ doesn't seem to support AGA, use Adpro!

very true,

I really wish it did.

I still use it for making my pattern wallpaper for workbench match the workbench palette and reduce the colors, resolution,  dither, etc. I only run WB in 16 colors, so it works well for that.

As you've got an 060 I'd recommend:

BOOM AGA
ScummMV AGA

And maybe a bit of Quake

And of course there are also loads of great 060 demos to play -> Dusty

:)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

Cygnus ED was always a must for me back when I was running legacy systems day to day.  I bought V 5 again from AmigaKit about a month or so ago for my SAM 440, and can't compliment it enough.  It's always been a rock solid product, assuming you have a need for a killer text editor.

ADPro is another I would wholeheartedly recommend.  Everytime I use Photoshop I yearn for the good old days of ADPro.  Powerful and a joy to use.

Thank you everyone, that gives me some ideas to try. :)  I'm afraid I'll be rather distracted, I just found a box full of old coverdisks, so that will keep me busy for a while.  ;)

Hard to go wrong with DPaint for nostalgia factor as well.  In the "big list of Amiga software you must use 20 years later to appreciate it for what it is", DPaint is damn near at the top of the list.

AmigaVision was always a fave of mine too, but in retrospect would seem extremely boring no most likely.  That was in the day before there was much of any interactive creation tools on the market, and man - did it keep me busy for ages doing up dumb business proposals and demos that would never see the light of day :)

Have fun with the coverdisks, and let us know if you find any real gems!

DPaint is one of the few paint programs that seemed intuitive and simple to me.

Dpaint is a must, PPaint isn't bad - ImageFX is also a must.
Pagestream is also a killer program.

Oh man...the hours I spent using DPaint IV....I still have that spiral bound manual floating around here. I also like Brilliance! 2.0 a lot, for AGA graphics.

Oh wow, lots of utils/etc. for OS3.1 ... Tho, A warning: i am on 3.9 atm, sorry if any of these are OS3.9 only..

Directory Opus 4.12... I just never cared for V. 5/Magellan, and the like..

AudioMasterIV, DCTV Paint, Dpaint 4 + 5, FTW, obviously! ImageFX, Brilliance2 (alil buggy on my '060, tho) SnoopDos, EaglePlayer fer sure, CygnusED (in my C: drawer) BootChange (random WB/Window backdrops and system sounds) , another 'startupsound' I think, to play any sample on the opening of the WB window, ... hmm, for an '060, OxyPatcher , Fblit, ...

Oh, dang... my personal 'killer app' for my miggies: LightWave3D V. 5 !!!

Hardly a 'must-have' program.. but w/ an '060... ya gotta check out the fractal program 'ChaosPro'.... Makes INcredible images.. and if ya gotta photo printer, they print beautifully too...

Unpacked (on Aminet) comes to mind! ;)
Earth has a lot of things other folks might want... like the whole planet. And maybe these folks would like a few changes made, like more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and room for their way of life. - William S. Burroughs
