RiVA - Fastest 68k MPEG Player
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:22:56 PM »
I downloaded the demo from aminet http://aminet.net/package/gfx/show/RiVA and I have to say this is a very impressive MPEG player...works fantastic on my 060/AGA 1200.
Does anyone know if he's still accepting registrations?

Docs says to register via RegNet:
https://secure.reg.net/Product.asp?ID=9546
But that gets re-directed and it says the sum is £6.75 (says 10 UKP reg fee in docs).

Don't want to go through with it unless I know it'll work and I'll receive full 060 version of RiVA.
Thanks in advance.

Im sure someone will correct me if Im mistaken, but wasnt Riva superceeded by moovid (as in same author)?
I dont know for sure, but I have a sneaking suspicion it's no longer possible to register it.
Have you tried FroggerNG? by far my favorite 68k video player. Supports quite a few video formats, even some that have surfaced after it's demise (I guess they share enough in common with other formats/codecs). Best of all though is that its now freely available and you can find a keyfile on aminet.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

You can get the registered RiVa from one of the latest Amiga Future cover CDs (I cant remeber exactly which one, but you can easily use google for that).

Despite RiVA being the fastest MPEG player, as suggested, you can use FroggerNG, which is now free and has much more features than RiVA.

MooVid is only for AVI and quicktime/MOV video playback, but it is another, non related product.

@fishy_fiz & Gulliver

Thanks. :)

I think I may have tried FroggerNG in the past, I can't remember, but now there's a keyfile I'm going to try it again! It is for AGA as well right?

Yes, it works on AGA.

Good luck!

I registered via that site in last November. it was $15 USD as I recall. I don't see why he would refuse the money :)

Let me know if you find a mpeg1 converter that works well with RiVA. I had to redo my computer and forgot which one i was using. I had tried several and the one I thought i was using no longer even produces mpeg1 files on my system, well, that's not 100% true, it does produce files but they are all distorted.

RiVA works much better for AGA than Frogger. Running in color will reduce the frame-rate slightly but if you have a PAL system you can get some of that back by pressing space which will decrease the vertical resolution some.

I registered both Riva and PIVMooVid (I run a Picasso 4, see sig) years ago.  I found them to not overlap and to be very fast.

I never got the same performance out of frogger.

Its a shame that video codecs came and went faster than they could be coded for Amiga.  I wish I had a good way to convert modern content back to codecs that play well on Amiga.

@Tenacious

I personally used ffmpeg to convert video file types to more amiga friendly video formats. I think mencoder may be available for 68k as well, although Ive not used it.
