JIT-enabled Odyssey 1.16.1 Released for AROS
« on: April 12, 2012, 04:05:21 PM »
We are happy to annouce that the first update to Odyssey Web Browser for AROS is available. The major feature introduced in this update is JavaScript Just-In-Time compilation which enhances the performance and usability of the browser! Don't miss out on this update!

Full change list:
- enabled JavaScript JIT engine -> from 300% to 1000% score increase in JavaScript benchmarks
- enabled IconDatabase (web site icons presentation)
- fixed transfer animation images and web site icons rendering
- using latest Cairo 1.12.0 for rendering
- enabled SVG image processing filters

The binaries can be downloaded from here. This version is also available in the Icaros 1.4.1 released yestarday.

Note: The update requires new pixman.library. It is suggested that you update your distribution to latest version first.

I would again like to thank Fab for making the sources available and various people for coding and testing help!

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

AmigaOS or MorphOS on x86 would sell orders of magnitude more than the current, hardware-intensive solutions. And they\\\'d go faster. --D.Haynie

This is one good port, very, very fast compared to the previous version thanks to JIT javascript. It does make a huge difference on some sites and it's very fast overall.

Fabs browser is great, great work and so pleasant to use and I love how it reminds me of IBrowse. Take the engine and build an amazing GUI around it and you have it. Great download manager, great adblocker, great bookmark manager and so on.

Very nice! :) I doubt however that many people with fast, modern x86 computers will notice much difference *in practice* (unless for sites that is severely overloaded with über-heavy JS), but since it's there, it should of course be used!

Should get benchmark numbers up quite a bit... :)

Yeah I agree, but it's quite a bit more than "a GUI", he has during the last couple of years built *a complete application* around the webkit engine.

IMO, Odyssey defines how an Amiga browser should be; a lot like Ibrowse, all native GUI, all tools and managers you could wish for, supporting the very latest web standards, great flexibility when it comes to settings, spoofing, etc. It's just great! :D
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

You will definitely notice on any site that makes heavy use of things like jQuery and the like. Google applications too.
