Might I add that Nokia is from my home country and my first smart phone was a Nokia. I don't like seeing Nokia end up this way. They should be making high end Andriod phones not be an unpaid prostitute for M$.

Windows Phone, as a platform, is too far behind Android and iOS now to be considered viable. I am sure it will have its appeal to some. The intergrated live and xbox features are nice. But everything else just plain sucks. Even the music player, which is a Zune byproduct, is twitchy.

Agree with CritAnime - the Zune software and general interface for Win Phone 7 phones is just god awful.  After the failure of the Zune, they should have got rid of that whole Zune crap long ago.  It's essentially cursed, IMHO.

Josh (the author of the OP link) has a very valid point in that article, and I agree with him wholeheartedly.  This iteration of Win phone is just too little too late, at least for us guys in first world countries.  We're used to iOS and Android, and quite frankly the Windows Phone 7 experience is just ****ty in comparison.  It's just too late for people on this side of the pond/people in first world countries to jump ship from iOS or Android to Windows Phone 7.

That being said, MS aren't going after guys like me or you, the "Joe Poweruser"- or if they are, they are wasting their time.  I had an iphone for years after many years of Blackberry handsets, now using Android.  Is Win phone 7 usable?  Yes, but I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

But it does have a place:  emerging markets, in countries where people are still mostly using feature phones - MS and Nokia are really gunning for these markets, but I just don't see them gaining much headway here.  I can get a Samsung Nexus for a similar price as a Nokia N 800 with contract - guess which one I'd get?  Actually, I got the Note over both of them.

I will give you an example of the people I do recommend Windows Phone 7 handsets to, though.  TL;DR warning as usual, lol.

My mother has had a cell phone for going on 10 years now - she's a woman in her 60's.  Since 2005, when I upgraded to a blackberry from my Motorola Razr, she has been using said old Razr handset that I passed down to her.  2003, first gen Motorola RAZR.  Her mobile phone usage is about as complex as calling my father for a ride from the hairdressers.  No emailing, no texting, no games - she uses it a few times a week as a phone.  Few people are in this situation she is, in fact most people couldn't live without a more intuitive phone that does texting, photos, etc in a more modern fashion.

Her cell phone contract is coming due in 2 months, and I am trying to get her to move on to a more modern phone.  I've replaced the battery in her RAZR 5 times on my dime over 10 years, and while the phone does everything she asks of it, I'm paying more for replacement batteries every few years for the old clunker than it would cost to get her a base model smartphone with new contract.  Android and W7 phones are free with the 3 year renewal contract she'll be signing up for, iPhone 4S is about $159 with contract, iPhone 3 GS is free with contract.  She's got no interest in the iPhone.

I took her to the cell phone store to peruse the phones.  She found the iPhone "cute", but said it was far too much money and too complex for her uses, and she's 110% right on that.  She found Android phones, especially with add-on interfaces outside stock Google UI configs confusing.  She then picked up a Win 7 phone, a Nokia N 800.  She found it simple, uncluttered and fairly intuitive.  She'll likely end up getting that N 800 phone here in a month or two when we renew her contract.  It's perfect for her.

Not many people have the limited tech know how or limited basic needs she does, but there are some that find the Win Phone 7 offerings great - Nokia especially make just excellent hardware, they always have.  The N 800 will be just perfect for her.

The old selling point on the Windows Mobile platform (think Treo era) was Exchange integration, and they were widely adopted in enterprise for that, similar to how Blackberry is still massive in Enterprise.  Everything supports Exchange server now, whether it be iOS, Android, or W Phone 7.

If the best thing you can say about a smartphone OS is "it's almost as good at being a feature phone as a feature phone," that says something...

(But then, I'm a crotchety bastard who's owned the same chintzy little feature phone for about four years now and sees absolutely no reason to bother with anything newer...)

I've used a Windoze smart phone(HTC Imagio) and wow..that thing sucked!!  I loved the phone itself but Windows OS has no business being on a phone.  Complete junk imo.  Very buggy locked up etc.  I do not regret returning the phone and getting an Android based phone :).  And no matter how you shake it, it is still Windows, yuk!

I had no probs with the HTC phone. But Windows Phone dragged the whole thing down. I swiftly went back to BlackBerry after using Windows Phone for a few months.

What do you mean "unpaid"? Microsoft paid Nokia a fortune to get them into this deal.

In Q4 2011 alone, Nokia received $250 million from MS for using Windows Phone, and it's rumoured these "platform support payments" will eventually exceed one billion. At the same time they're apparently paying far less royalties to Microsoft in return.

So a prostitute, sure, but they seem to have managed to sell themselves for a reasonable amount at least.

Maybe windows mobile 7 is awesome, but it'd have to pretty much dispense beer and skittles to make up for the atrocious experience I had a few years back with the old version of windows mobile.

It made windows 95 look stable by comparison.

I have to disagree - I love Windows Phone Mango 7.5 - It's SUPER fast - Simple and works like a charm.

Android in my oppinion lags, is slow and looks so unfinished. And yes I know you can change themes and so, but that just makes Android slower and slower.... So Im happy Nokia choosed Windows Phone over Android.

But the best is stil iPhone with iOs. Everything works, looks good, and the apps are so much better than on Android.

And yes ... I have an iPhone 4S, a Nokia 800 and a Samsung Galaxy II, iPad 1 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10"  - So I can compare.

And for all those - "Oh Android is open source and free for everyone. They don't stalk you like Apple and MS" - Those who say that, havent read the Google License. It's so much worse :-O

I love my unlocked Nokia E63. It's only used on wifi for Skype right now. It's also a nice backup for my Android phone. Symbian isn't nearly as sophisiticated as Ios or Android but it's not difficult to use and is reliable. I had an HTC phone with Windows Mobile 6 a few years ago. It wasn't very easy to use. It had a stylus like the palm pilot and doing anything but basic telephone functions was way too complicated. I much prefer Symbian to Windows Mobile and Android to either of them.
A2500 owned since 1993 with A2630/DKB 2632, DKB Megachip, GVP EGS Spectrum, A2320 and GVP HC+8 on the inside and a DCTV on the outside. A4000D with CSPPC, Cybervision 64 and a Flicker Magic flicker fixer. A4000T Toaster Flyer & CSMKII. All systems completly retro and classic and mostly used to do geometic art as in my avatar.

Because I write iOS and Android apps, I have an iPad 1, 4th generation iPod touch, original iPhone, Samsung Galaxy S II, an Acer Tablet - and my wife has a Nokia Lumia 710.

For some odd reason the Nokia Lumia 710 hangs up on people if you accidentally touch it to your cheek - so that right there, makes it annoying.  Something like that, is hard to overcome, despite what might be good about it.

I thought the OS is OK.  WinPhone's today - are all single core.  I buy my phones off contract.  But when I was on contract, I was really careful to get something that I'd be happy with for two years.  No way, would I buy a single core phone, when everyone else has gone dual core.  You can say, the OS runs fairly snappy on the single core, and thats true, but, look dual core support in WinPhone is around the corner, I'd not buy a single core phone today.

Plus a lot of your favorite apps will be missing, if I was a consumer of smartphones, I wouldn't get it, except I guess, I did buy it, heheh, well, my wife doesn't care about apps - we thought this phone might work, but actually she isn't happy with it.

I wouldn't buy a Windows phone even if it was better and/or cheaper. Simple as that. It's my life, it's my money.

There are rumors that Nokia is developing a new linux based OS to replace the Symbian 40 series.

BTW, I almost bought N9 also, but found it somewhat short on charm compared to N900.
