Make Leisure Suit Larry come again!
« on: April 04, 2012, 05:58:53 PM »
Its kinda amiga related.  Al Lowe is remaking the original Leisure Suit Larry game, but is looking for backers to find it so he does not need to go through a company to do it.  They need $500000 in 30 days to find it, so far it is at $161,318.

These sort of projects are interesting. Check out the Wasteland 2 kickstarter which overshot its required funding massively.

If the time line to raise the funds was longer, this might just happen.

As for me, I would love to see this remade (again), but alas, I've played through it a few times already and well...

I'm older now, sex jokes aren't as funny as when I was 12. And besides, I'm still busy making donations to the Magellen bounty. :)

Now if this were a remake of Space Quest 5 that promies to add in the TALKIE features that got dropped from the original....

I'd CERTAINLY donate! Especially if it promised to run on MorphOS or OS 4.

LOL! There is *SUCH* a double entendre in this title.......

It would be cool if he wanted to hire some programmers.

Anyway i played all of the original games. In fact,  its why i have a Roland MT32 when my most notable musical achievement was playing the recorder (poorly) in elementary school music class.

I happened to see a new Leisure Suit Larry game (for console) at Game Stop. I bought it, and playing it i can say that game is not even a shell of its former self... its like looking at the abomination that is http://www.amiga.com pushing their re-branded crappy tablets...

Hope its not a repeat of that junk!

For a new game, maybe. For a remake? No.

Think of it as a chance to actually "pay" for the game that so many people pirated..  ;-)

Not that I'm saying you pirated it...  Just for those who maybe did (and you know you're out there, Sierra sold more hint books than copies of the game)!

:-)

I was disappointed it was only a re-make, but at only $15 I figured it was worth it to encourage the good developers to keep going...
Now, I pirated it originally.  However, I did eventually buy a copy.  But it was used, so no money went to Al..  This is my way of getting him his share.  ;-)

Another variation on the theme is Jane Jensen's kickstarter:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg

She and her husband are also Sierra alums. (Gabriel Knight series and others)
Although she's not doing a game per se, she's doing a few games by her company during the year..
Interesting.  I haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet, but I'm watching it and waiting for more information on the games...

I probably will, again mostly to support the game designers whose work I really enjoyed...

A lot of money to fund a remake that simply won't feel the same.

I remember LSL series fondly on my A3000, just like I remember the Monkey Island series.

Bought the Monkey Island remake for the ipad, and while it is done just great, it "doesn't take me back".

I played it a few times and never touched it again - it was disjointed and cobbled together on the tablet platform, and did little to revisit the nostalgia I had for the game.

That being said, it's sort of an enigma.  I'm no longer the teenager that loved these games, but I have real fond memories of them.  I could fire them all up on the UAE machine or crack the A1200 out if I wanted the true experience, but I'd likely play them for 5 minutes then go back to BF3 on my gaming PC, bored stiff.

That's a lot of money for a game that nobody is going to buy.

That would be boring, I agree..  BF3?
Ok, I admit, I haven't played it but let me take a wild guess...
First Person Shooter??

Seriously, to each his own..
I liked a few FPS games..  But as with you and adventure games, I got pretty bored after a bit..  Been there, done that..
Adventure/Role Playing tho, that can keep my interest.
That's why I like those games...

And, weirdami, "nobody is going to buy"??
Have you seen how many people have already bought it?  Over 5000 already.
Yes, it's not millions.  But it's not nobody.

A small market is still a market..

Although it might be age here too...
Adventure games (for me) predate the Amiga...
I go back to Apple II (didn't own, but had a friend who did) and C64 gaming nostalgia for these games..
People who were teenagers when the Amiga was around missed some of that early gaming mystique..

Heck, I miss games that require manuals and notepads..  ;-)
(I don't miss codewheels tho)

Leisure Suit Larry was my girlfriends game, I watched it whilst thinking "when is she going to finish this bloody game and let me get back to KILLING!!"....   ...damn game wasted so much good shoot'em up time. I was so glad she got into Chaos Engine. Joyous two player KILLING!! ....ahh, them's the days.
Falling into a dark and red rage.

Sierra got plenty of my money back in the day....

The Monkey Island remake was great. The ability to switch seamlessly between updated and classic modes was fantastic.

Thats why they are using kickstarter. The people wanting to have the game made are the ones who are paying for it.

If anyone else ends up buying it after its done, all the better.

Heck, Wasteland 2 raised what, 1.5 million ?
