Can CD32 3.1 ROM's replace A1200 3.0 ROM's?
« on: January 14, 2004, 11:57:07 AM »
Hi,

I have an old CD32 with cracked lid which I use for spares, and I was wondering if the 3.1 ROM's from it would be compatible with an A1200, so that I can replace the 3.0 ROM's in one of my older A1200's? I know that there ARE some differences between the CD32 and A1200 ROM's. For example, the CD-ROM drivers are on the CD32's ROM's, plus support for the Akiko chip. But I'm not sure whether these are on the CD32's extended ROM or the 3.1 ROM's. In fact, I'm not entirely sure if the extended ROM is actually physically separate from the twin 3.1 ROM's anyway! Anybody know?

Thanks!
Steve.

Google is your friend.

Can I use a CD32 Kickstart 3.1 Rom in an A1200?

There are conflicting reports on this some say that you cannot use the ROM in an A1200 as it will do nothing. The CD32 only comes with one Kickstart chip whilst the A1200 requires two. Others say that you can , as long as your Amiga has an MMU (i.e. a full '030, '040 or '060) you can soft boot it, using a utility such as the BlizzMagic for Blizzard 68k boards, etc.

However, according to rumour the CD32 ROMs are not the full 3.1, but a slightly older version. The main difference in the CD32 ROM is the CDfilesystem support and, as this is no use for the A1200 (as it does not have a built-in drive) there is no particular reason to try it. It may be possible to get it to work but you are better getting the full 3.1 ROMs, disks and manuals. These now retail for less than £40.

Unluckilly AFAIK CD32 ROMs won't work in A1200.
But I have no experience of my own.

Good luck

It is indeed an older version.  I would be very surprised if they contained A1200 IDE and PCMCIA support, and even WriteChunkyPixels() may fail due to lack of Akiko.  Even the A1200 and A4000 3.1 ROMs are slightly different from each other so I doubt the CD32 version would work - at least not without missing or incomplete hardware support.
