A500 & rom 2.05
« on: January 14, 2004, 10:50:57 AM »
I have a spare 2.05 ROM after upgrading my A600 to 3.1 , so during the x-mass vacations I thought that it would be cool to upgrade my 1.3 A500+, left at home.

What I did was to replace the 1.3 with the 2.05 but the computer wouldn't start (like there was no ROM to it). A friend of mine said that it might be a software problem : the 2.05 ROM checks for the IDE that isn't present on the A500, so it won't boot.

Anybody there that has tried this kind of upgrade? I hope that my 2.05 ROM is still alive after this experiment (I haven't test it yet back to the A600)!

P.S. The A500+ had the 2.04 originally, but since then I've chainged lots of ROM couples (1.3/2.04), and now I'm left with an old 1.3 only.

Hmm, it shouldn't be a problem.. The scsi.device checks for the IDE and just isn't initialised if it can't find any IDE hardware.

What revision A500? Are you sure you plugged the ROM in correctly?

It's a revision 8, and the ROM socket has an extra pair of pins that should be skiped (the top ones, I've learned it the hard way: that's why I had to change many pair of roms).

The 2.05 ROM is 512K big and 1.3 is 256M so you need to make a mod to recognise the larger ROM.

As a matter of fact the A500+ came with a 512KB ROM (2.04), and the 1.3 just replaced it with no further modifications/troubles.

The point is that the next version (2.05 from the A600) seems not to be alive on the same motherboard that hosted long ago a 2.04

I just tried the 2.05 back to the A600 and works fine (thankfully is still alive!).

-The A500+ has a 68010 as a CPU, a 1.3 ROM, 1.5MB chip and the rest is left as a stock A500+.

-The A600 has a 68030@40 & 68882, 16MB fast, 2MB chip, and 3.1 ROM

I think it has to do with the special reallocation tables that missing (used by softkickers), after doing a plain substitution of the chip to another motherboard.

I did the same thing with my standard a500, swapped the 2.x rom from my a600 into a500 and put 1.3 rom into my a600  :-D worked sweet on both machines..  :-D

is 2.04 256k only? I am not sure if i used 2.04 or 2.05, but it worked fine without any mods at all..

Both ROMs should be interchangeable. The big difference between 2.04 and 2.05 was the IDE support. The 2.04 ROM had none. The 2.05 ROM was for the A600.
