WinUAE sound problem
« on: March 08, 2012, 08:13:18 PM »
Hi folks, long time no see!

I have a problem with sound in WinUAE. Basically, it's either out of synch or, when emulating something CPU-intensive such as c2p effects in a demo, it comes out all garbled.

I'm using WinUAE version 2.3.3 with ROMs and ROM key from my registered copy of Amiga Forever.

The PC I'm running WinUAE is an Asus EeePC. It's got an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU and 1 GB of RAM. I'm running Windows XP.

Am I missing something in the WinUAE config? Is it a bad WinUAE version? Or is the computer just too slow to emulate sound? AFAIK I've emulated cycle-exact sound+graphics on some old Athlon-watchacallit back in 2003/2004 without any quality loss.

Any help much appreciated!

Are you using onboard graphics?
I suspect your PC isn't up to the job to be honest.
I had the same issue with the sound and i had to get a better machine.

Not sure what you mean by onboard graphics - it's emulated AGA I use 99% of the time. The EeePC itself has some crappy Intel 945 graphics chip.

Yeah, I had a feeling this little netbook wasn't beefy enough. Too bad though, it's a nice little machine otherwise. Well, still good enough for running DPaint :)

He means are you using RTG graphics in WinUAE.  It uses the on-board graphics adapter on your motherboard to display the RTG graphics and takes a lot of load of the emulator (it doesn't have to emulate the Amiga's custom display chips).

UAE then becomes a LOT faster.

You need to install Picasso 96 and some other stuff to operate this way.

But for displaying demoscene stuff RTG won't work - demo stuff almost always needs the native chipset.

my netbook has the dual core 1.6 atom and 2GB RAM and nvidia ION and Windows7. its really too slow for UAE and you'll need to increase the frame skip to get the sound to settle down.

the atom cpu's are really not well suited for UAE for demos and gaming. My audio even chokes on state of the art demo which runs on a 500 with 1 floppy?

Oh, also i'll add that with the RTG and JIT anabled you can run programs like TVpaint and Photogenics and Personal paint on your netbook just fine. I just say that as you mention liking dpaint. Dpaint V also supports RTG but its still limited to 256 colors.

If you want a netbook sized computer that is capable of running WINUAE full speed look at the Alienware M11x.

And the few that will use RTG are probably also going to be compiled for PPC thus incompatible with uae

Thanks for the answers, guys.
I suspected that my netbook would be too slow for cycle-perfect audio and graphics emulation. It reminds you just how complex and powerful the old custom chips in the Amiga really are, when a 1.6 GHz CPU struggles with emulating them :)
Graphics-wise I have no real problems, it's just the sound that doesn't function properly. I'm using my trusty old DPaint IV to pixel graphics and it works a treat, as does games that are playable without audio, such as Sim City.

Most of the demos I want to watch are available as video downloads or on youtube. It's just that it would have been nice to watch the ones that weren't available. Perhaps I can afford a beefier laptop in the future. I have several proper Amigas, though, with accellerators and other expansions. It's just I don't have the room to have them hooked up right now.

If it's 060-demos you want to watch (as in demos that actually don't do that much stuff with the chipset), I can give you my configuration-file which works pretty well on my old Aspire One netbook running WinXP.

I enjoy both oldschool copper/blitter demos and newschool c2p-driven stuff, so if you have a good config I'd appreciate it - can't hurt trying!

Really?  I use DPaint quite a bit under WinUAE and have never been able to get it to run properly under RTG (I've tried everything I can think of).
