CyberstormPPC rescued
« on: February 29, 2012, 08:31:29 PM »
Late last year one of my CSPPC stopped working; I was almost dead sure it was beyond rescue, since upon inspection, it seemed as if the cheap DCE PPC- fan had decided to give up. Jammed due to dust.

It is very sad when such a wonderful piece of hardware becomes useless, not only because of the economic value, but for me, more the thought that a piece of important amiga legacy hardware dies, never to render a single frame of Doom again.

Last hope: Stachu in Poland! I decided to let him have a go with the defect CSPPC, even though he clearly explained to me uncertain outcome of any rescue attempt; if the board logic itself had been fried by overheating, chances would be slim to bring back the card to life.

I had two CSPPC sent to Stachu in early february, one working for upgrade, and the defect one for rescue operation. It took Stachu only a couple of days to track down the problem with the non- working CSPPC and bring it back to life. So, both cards working, and now upgraded. I am soon pushing on 40, but when I went to the post- office to get the packet from Poland, I must have looked like a five- year old on christmas.

Excellent professional service! Thanks Stan...

That is great...but after all that typing you don't include the actual problem and or what components needed to fixed/replaced..mmm.. Kind of weak, imo.

Sorry for the weakness :)

Resoldering the 060- socket apparently did the trick with the dead CSPPC. I actually had a similar problem with another CSPPC a few years ago, it was sent for service to JJ at Amiga Center in france then.

As I understand, there was no problem with the PPC as I had first thought. I didn't ask for more specifics, I was just happy he got it working again.

For the dead CSPPC:
* 060 socket resoldering - 40€
* 68060/50 overclocked to 66Mhz - 65€
* PPC604e/350 overclocked to 367Mhz - 250€

Best thing with his service is he is in constant contact during the whole process, uploading pictures, mails etc so you always know whats happening.

Yeah, I'm really happy too. Especially with my A3000 now pushing the limits again.

That is superb.  Great outcome.  To put it into context.  I have a almost 5yo just failed ASUS Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS purchased in 1997 for around $550.  Chances of getting it operational again 0%.  Value per year $110. Planned obsolescence, priceless...

I very, very much doubt that.
