A590 SCSI not working
« on: January 13, 2004, 09:50:54 AM »
Ok, the actual A590 itself is working. I put in an additional 2mb of RAM and the amiga is seeing it all.

The problem is, it's not seeing the 2GB SCSI HDD I also put in.

I set the dip switches so it's the only SCSI drive in there, and I set delayed boot.

But under workbench, the icon is just not there.

The drive was pulled from a working computer. The drive itself does work.

Is there something else special I had to do? Should it have been fdisked so there were no dos partitions? Thanks.

@ami500:

You will have to partition it on the Amiga and then format the partitions to be able to use it - just like you would have to do one a pc.

To partition the disk you can use HDToolBox which should be on the 'Install' disk of the Workbench disk set. This holds true if you have Workbench 2.0 and above. If not, I am positive there exist some software to partition the disk on the install disk supplied with the A590.

Good luck!

Doh! I forgot about that disk. I'll have to see if something is on it.

Otherwise I should be upgrading to 2.04 rom and 2.1 workbench soon so that should do it then too? Thanks.

I've no idea how big disks A590 does support, it may also be part of the problem.

I don't think the 590 will be the problem.

It has an SCSI interface, and hence should support drives upto 180GB and more.

The problem is the software.

I recently got a 4-GB harddrive working on an old adapter. What i did was use HDInstTools from Aminet to partition and QUICK-Format the drive.

You need at least FastFileSystem, though, and verifying the drive failed. Nevertheless, after using a quick format without verify the drive (or rather, the partition I made) works very well.

Have fun,
McTrinsic

Ok what's fast file system?

Is it the file system that kickstart 2.x uses or something?

If you have a booting Workbench 2.x Disk, you have FastFileSystem.

You can choose it during setting up the drive with HDInstTools.

Ok cool. So it looks like the rom and kickstart upgrade I had planned should cover that trick then too. :) Thanks guys. Now I just have to get onto the dealer and get the chip and workbench.

I think that I have read in the WB 1.3 manual that the Fast File System is supported in Workbench 1.3, but ONLY for hard drives. However the best is probably to upgrade to 2.x anyway.

Hmm, you can use the 1.3 FFS for floppies too - you need to create a mountlist for them and use the diskchange command when you swap floppies.

The 2.0 FFS is in ROM, so it's available as soon as you power up the machine.

3.1 is the way to go anyway.

I decided to go with the 2.04 rom instead of the 3.1 mostly due to cost, and by the look of it, the 2.04 will do all I need it to do anyway. (Read PC disks and sort out this SCSI drive). :)

If all goes well, I'll have it by friday.

Well technically you don't need 2.04 for either of those tasks - 1.3 can handle both..

The FFS goes in the RDB of the hard drive, so you can have an FFS drive with 1.3 and also you can get crossdos or messydisk for 1.3

But it's a good idea to upgrade - 2.0 forwards is a big leap from 1.3 in usability.

Hope you can find those 2.1 disks so you can get crossdos out of the box..

FFS is also included on the A2091/590 install disk.

I have 1.3 rom and 1.3 workbench and can't read pc formatted floppies.

And yep, I'm getting workbench 2.1 with the rom. :) And a new mouse too. Damn it sucks using the keyboard to move the cursor. :(

MessyDos can fix that problem (Aminet).
