Need a special burned EPROM, any of you can help?
« on: January 12, 2004, 09:45:03 PM »
Hi all,

I have finally been able to get a copy (a pdf-file, rather) of the manual of the Phoenix-board.

It features the nice option of a built-in Kickstart-Switcher.

Two of the according sockets have been filled with Commodore ROMs, i.e. 1.3 and 3.1.

The other sockets may NOT be populated with original ROMs, though. I don't know if that is a blessing or not.

The manual says the following about the other two options of inserting KickROMs:

The first reads like this:
"A 40-pin EPROM socket able to accept 16-bit EPROMS from 128Kbyte up to 1Mbyte; intended for
custom Kickstarts.
This socket must NOT be used with a 40-pin ROM, for which ROM#1 and ROM#2 are provided.
This is a complete list of the devices which may be used:
Part No. - Size - # of pins
27C210 1 Megabit 40
27C220 2 Megabit 40
27C240 4 Megabit 40
27C280 8 Megabit 40
Equivalent non-CMOS parts may be used."

The second one is split up into four chips:
"Four 32-pin ROM/EPROM sockets which are a superset (enhanced version) of the four 28-pin
sockets on the original A1000 motherboard. (See figure D-3)
They will accept the 8-bit 27C512 EPROM used in our A1000 Kickstart-in-ROM kits as well as
larger 8-bit EPROMs up to the 27C080 (an 8 megabit device, sixteen times larger than the A1000
EPROMS. It is also possible with some board mods to fit battery backed static RAMS to these
sockets. Because these are 8-bit EPROMs, they must be used in pairs to emulate a 16-bit Kickstart
ROM.
This is a complete list of the devices which may be used:
Part No. - Size - # of pins
27C512 512Kbit 28
27C010 1 Megabit 32
27C020 2 Megabit 32
27C040 4 Megabit 32
27C080 8 Megabit 32
Equivalent non-CMOS parts may also be used e.g. 27512, 256k bit and 1 Megabit SRAMS may
also be fitted."

I have NO idea what all this means.

What I would like to have is the following:

1) a Kick 3.5 ROM
2) a Kick 2.05 ROM (latest release).

Does anyone know how to do this with the above information??

And, is anyone out here able to do burn the according EPROMS or could tell me who might be able to??

Thanks alot for your help,
McTrinsic

Kick 3.5 ROM?
There is no such i'm afraid. If you mean the ROM Update to use OS3.5 - OS3.9, that is just a file. Not a real EPROM. Dunno if it could be put into a ROM manually and just skip the ROM Update when booting Amiga. I know there is a hack by Harry "Piru" Sintonen that patches some functions and the exec.library in 3.1 ROM, but that's still not a 3.5 ROM nor an official replacement.

You can find that patch on his homepage. It will update the ROM file and save it. So you can take that file and burn an EPROM and use that instead of the original 3.1 ROM...

Sorry, can't help much :/
Amiga1200 in Ateo Tower, Phase5 Blizzard1260/50MHz, Phase5 SCSI-IV Kit, 64MB Fast-RAM, Elbox Mediator1200, Voodoo3000, SB128, PCI Ethernet Card, 30GB Quantum Fireball & 120GB Seagate Barracuda HDD, 48x24x48x LG CD-RW, 52x LG CD-ROM, Elbox FastATA1200

Well that means, that you can burn your own kickstart.

for Kickstart 1.3 (256 KByte - 2048 Kbit) you need 4x 8bit 27c512 eproms. 4x512 Kbit = 2048 Kbit

for Kickstart 3.1 (512 KByte = 4096 Kbit) you need 4x 8bit 27c1024 eproms.  4x1024 Kbit = 4096 Kbit

The same for the 40pin Epromsocket, but don't use a Original-Kickstatrom on this socket as the pin numberis the same, BUT the meaning of the pins is different.

a kickrom 1.3 256 KByte would fit into a 27c220 eprom (2048 Kbit - 2Mbit)

a kickrom 3.1 512KByte woukld fit into a 27c240 eprom (4096 Kbit = 4 Mbit)

Remember 1 Byte is 8 bit

Kickstart 3.5 doesn't exist. Its a badly dangerous hack of a beta 3.1 Kickrom

as always: Without warranty and sorry for bad English

Markus (I also own a Phoenixboard. SCSI sucks, but the rest is wonderfull A1000 with 2MB Chipmem  :-D  )

Uhm... well... I figured that I can use these to burn my own eproms.

But: I - and I mean personally - can not do this!

So I need someone who could do this for me.

Does this mean these things are standard EPROMs?

Anyone having an EPROM-Burner??

Anyone who would BURN me a file to an EPROM???

;)

Thanks alot!

Could you try using this as the ROM file in UAE??

That should give an idea if it works as a ROM-replacement.

And if anyone has OS3.5+ in UAE running, could any of you find out if it works with this 3.5 ROM as the ROM file in UAE??

Thanks a lot!!

I have to figure out if my old burner can handle megabit eproms.

But we need to discuss this after per E-Mail as it could end in not solegal actions  :-D  :-D

But why not just using the normal kickroms? Do you have a Level42 kickstart (Kick1.2 with implemented Diskcopier) or a SCA-kickbooster?

I have to look into my old collection of kickstarts  :-D

I have a programmer and a UV eraser.  I can also split and swap.   I can take care of most eproms commonly used in Amiga's in a DIP package up to and including the 40 pin 27C400.  Let me know if I can help without entering into a questionable legal situation.

You can, but the only 3.5 rom I know of that's available in publick is a 3.1 rom wih it's version numbers changed...

There is supposed to be a 3.5 rom from Escom and their Walker proto type, but AFAIK, it was never released to the public (legally or illegally)

Thanks a lot for the answer and especially the offer. I will see what Markus_Bieler and will be able to do - since he got the same Mainboard as I things might be more easy. otherwise I WILL let you know ;)

Thanks a lot anyway!

Almost forgot:

What about this file that patches the 3.1 ROM to use OS3.5 and later??

Can this be used as ROm file in UAE?

If so, it should be possible to use it as a real ROM - or at least it's worth trying to...

Have fun,
