A4000 + Windows XP (Sorry!) = Internet?
« on: January 12, 2004, 08:20:38 PM »
If I put a Zorro Ethernet card in my A4000 and then run a cable to my PC (Sorry x2!) can I use Windows XP`s (Sorry x3!) Internet Sharing function so the A4000 can access the Internet? Has anyone else done this?

Provided it is properly configured, it'll work fine :-)

Used my A1200 like that quite a few times.  All the A1200 thinks is going on is that the local gateway is on the same LAN.  It doesn't have to think the gateway is anything special/potentially incompatible.

Did pretty much the same thing with Win95 and Proxy from AnalogX (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm) instead of ICS, which Win95 doesn't have.  Worked like a champ.

Subjectively, faster (with 26.4 modem in peecee) than usual 28.8 modem connected to IOExtender, too.

Bingo! The AnalogX Proxy is exactly what I used when I got my X-SURF Card :-)
...nothing easier to setup than that one

Absolutely possible, a piece of cace actually! If you have no switch/hub in between the two computers, then you would need a "crossed" cable (ask at your computer store). If the PC is using broadband to connect to the Internet, then you would obviously need two network cards in your PC, one to the Internet, and one to your "LAN". On the Amiga side, you will need a TCP/IP stack. I would recommend Miami DX which has DHCP functions and a dead-easy "guide" program for setting up the network. Back to the PC side - disable the built in firewall in XP and download the excellent free firewall Zone Alarm from zonelabs.com. On the "Internet" card, disable all protocols except the TCP/IP protocol to be extra safe. Also select the "share this connection" (or whatever it says). On the "LAN" card you can make the file/printer sharing available in addition to the TCP/IP, then if you install sambafs (from aminet) you will be able to mount shared folders on the XP side as volumes on the Amiga side so you can browse/move any files back and forth between the two computers besides connecting to the net.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)
