A2058 Problem
« on: February 02, 2012, 10:57:25 PM »
I want to work out if the problem is with my Amiga or with the A2058 ram expansion.

Amiga is a Rev4 A2000 with kickstart 2.04. 512K Chip ram.

No other zorro cards.

WIth the A2058 (populated with 2mb) 90% of the time the A2000 refuses to boot. It just gives the first grey screen and then either stays like that or else crashes.

If i set it to 4MB or 8MB it gives the error of the autoconfig board.

If i disable the amiga works fine but obviously with only 512K.

The card looks good, caps look good and the edge connector is clean. I cleaned it myself to make sure and even cleaned the zorro slots using an electronics cleaner.

Tried all zorro slots. Same problem.

I am buying a GVP Scsi controller with 8MB, so i dont really care for the A2058 as such but i hope the a2000 is fine.

I would guess its a case of old sockets... Some ram needs reseated because it is making intermittent contact. It could also have a bad chip or two in the mix. next time you get it booted with the card, try filling ram up with files until you use the 2Mb almost up.. if it crashes and burns before that, its a dead giveaway. sometimes swapping chips around can also make the symptoms change. Its always best and fastest to have ram on the accelerator when possible.

The base 2MB is soldered on, so if one of those chips or joints has gone bad it will be harder to repair. I think there's a RAM tester on the install disk - see what it says.

Yep i'm thinking its the ram chips too. Unfortunately they are soldered.

I would boot up to test but it barely ever boots with the 2MB enabled. More like maybe 1 in 20 or 50 times.

I also think its the ram because without the card the amiga boots fine and if i set the ram card at a ram it does not have (4mb or 8mb) the amiga boots to the expansions screen of kickstart 2.x with a red color indicating a bad board.

So i believe the zorro slots are probably working fine.

I should of realized that was not a socketed board.. oops!

Like you say bad solder, broken trace or bad ram.
