FastlaneZ3 can't read drive geometry
« on: January 11, 2004, 09:28:12 AM »
I installed a FastlaneZ3 but the controller can't read the geometry of all connected drives.

The rampart works with a charm.

My config:

A4000D + Scandobler +  GVP Spectrum + Ariadne + FastlaneZ3

Kick 3.1

Hi Markus_Bieler

with which OS? and which SB revision? (Fastlane requires SB11)

Have you tryed with the last HDToolbox od BB-2?

or with HDInstTools? (from Aminet)

REMEMBER that the 2 programs, are not compatible, so if you use one don't use the other.

Ciao

A4000D + Fastlane (40mb fastmem) + GVP-Spectrum + Scandoubler arXon + Ariadne

kick 3.1 + os3.1 plain on IDE-harddisk

HD-Toolbox has same problem. Recognises that there is something on the bus, but not what drive.

According to the manual you need atleast a SuperBuster -09 (but I would install -11 to be sure) and if you use an A3640 vers. 3.0 acceleratorcard then you need to change the clock drive chip 74FCT244 to a 74FCT240. If it is a version 3.1 then you need the 74FCT244. You need the z3scsi.device also and remember to write it in the icon of hdtoolbox so it can scan for the right scsi device.

Then the manual warns about never use the "Reload geometry" command ´cause it will destroy the info on the harddisk that previously have been used on the Amiga controller.

Did you know all this? I´m asking because I don´t know how much you know.  :-)

yes I knew all that.

I have a A4000D with A3640 rev 3.1

I will check if "Slow moe" will change anything. But my cable is only about 2m total (intern and extern)

There are several jumpers on the board which aren't described in the manual. Does anybody know anything about them?

Anyone know where I can download the latest z3scsi.device driver from? None of my disks have the device present.
It's not the question, that is the problem, it is the problem, that is the question.

Hmm...  It sounds like you have everything right under control.  The only thing I can chime in on is to triple-check to make sure you have the proper termination everywhere, etc...  If you are running any external devices on the FastLane, I think there are termination blocks on the board that need to be removed.

If it's any consolation, I always thought the FastLane was really strange at discovering geometry, anynow.  I had two identical hard drives (down to nearly identical serial numbers, exactly identical model numbers and production dates) that the FastLane detected with different geometry.  The total free space worked out the same, but the number of heads and cylinders were different.  Puzzled the heck out of me.  Never did figure it why it did that.
