Questions before purchasing a1200
« on: January 22, 2012, 06:30:46 AM »
I'm thinking of getting an amiga 1200 after being away since 1992.  I had an a500 and a1000 at the time, but have forgotten so much!

I found what I think is a great deal on a a1200 with many accessories included, but it's a PAL amiga and don't know what my monitor options are.  Will I be able to use this amiga with a NTSC LCD monitor/tv?

Also, I've read that networking the a1200 should be fairly easy using a pcmcia ethernet card.  Is there a specific one that works out-of-the-box?  Is wireless an option or only wired?

Thanks,

Wayne

There's a list of Dell monitors out there that's been reported to work. Maybe someone can pitch in. With that, you just need a simple adapter for the amiga monitor.
In VGA mode (fine for many programs, not great for games), any monitor will obviously work, but it can be trouble to get the amiga set up that way :)

For games, you'll want a monitor solution. I have hooked my 1200 to an NTSC tv in the past, but in NTSC mode, a PAL amiga only outputs grey scale.

I have wireless. It was kind of painfull to set up, but people can help you. Wired IS a lot easier. Amigakit sells options for you.

The 1200 is a great model!

I have a PAL 1200 and it seems to works just fine (in color) with the TVs I have tried it with the composite, but the quality is not so good.

There are a few options.

some dell monitors (2320) will work at 15hz. You may be able to get an AmigaManiac SVIDEO converter. I really want the Indivision AGA MK2 when that comes out.

If you go wireless there is the Prism2(mine is linksys wpc11ver3  prism 2.5), or for wired you can use NE2000 compatible cards.

The 1200 needs a fix generally to use PCMCIA cards and the card reset tool which I boot up before I put the card online works fine. Think I got it from Aminet. I struggled a bit with Miami but that was mainly to do with networking with other PCs. The broadband works fine with the PCMCIA but the computer is slow really if you are expecting to surf. You need a graphics card. I prefer the 4000 cus I banged a PIV into it plus an accelerator. Best I can use the 1200 for is mail and downloading Aminet files... Still prefer the A1200 but then I go Commando... ie 1993-1996 for games software etc. Still tons about.

No idea about the monitor as I use my original Microvitec or a modern monitor with the PIV.
