FS: Powerbook G4, 1.67 GHz, High Resolution
« on: January 17, 2012, 06:36:42 PM »
Hi!

I am selling my Apple Powerbook G4 (top model).

1.67 GHz G4 Mac (fast RAM interface)
high resolution 15.2" display with 1440 x 900

american/canadian PSU
american/canadian keyboard layout
(the two points above are the cause, why I want to sell the system, I have managed to get one with a german PSU/layout)

This is the top-model for the upcoming MorphOS 3.0

Buy it now and here for EUR 250,- plus shipping or wait until MOS 3.0 is released and the prices explode

I am open for a swap for other amiga items.

The top model is the 5.9 (1139)... capable of resolutions of 1680x1050... i think this is one below the top model. Just a small clarification... good luck with the sale.

You are correct (pricewise), but they are both the fastest model (fastest CPU with highest memory bandwith). The 17" model is not in my mind as 17"-devices are not my idea of mobility. I would prefer the 15,2"-powerbooks over the 17"-ones so the huge one was not on my mind.

Really?
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

PowerBook 5,8 and 5,9 is the same *generation* though, both released in October 2005, and they are pretty much the same computer. The main difference is the 15" screen (1440x960) of the 5,8 and the 17" screen (1680x1050) of the 5,9. Otherwise they are pretty much the same, for example they both have 1.67GHz G4 (was there a 1.5 version of the 15" as well?), ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 (4X AGP) graphics with 128 MB of VMEM, "Dual Layer SuperDrive", etc. So it's mostly down to what size of the computer you prefer.

The generation before this, the PowerBook 5,6 and 5,7, was released in January 2005. The 5,6 is the 15" (1280x854) and the 5,7 is the 17" (1440x900). But in this generation there is a *difference* in VMEM, the 15" model only having 64 MB while the 17" having 128 MB. There was also a lower end version of the PowerBook 5,6 / 15" model, having a 1.5 GHz G4 instead of 1.67 GHz, and a "Combo Drive" instead of "Super Drive".

These are the models (5,6 - 5,9) that will be supported by MorphOS 3.0 AFAIK. I'm thinking of a 5,8 myself, having just seen a local ad where it will be sold for about €150. Very tempting! :)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

I had no MOS 3.0 here to test it, maybe you could give it to me ;)
Normally higher memory-bandwith should result in better performance.

Alas, neither do I :-( The tests were run under OSX (Leopard).

It's an interesting result, most likely due to the higher latency of DDR2 compared to DDR memory (The ~20% difference would be about right for this). Whilst DDR2 memory may be capable of four operations per memory clock, the G4 cpu isn't (in fact it doesn't use DDR at two operations per clock either).

Regardless, the lower power consumption of DDR2 should result in a greater battery life (big plus :-) ).

As with the move from SDRam to DDR on G4 systems, the rest of the system can probably benefit from using DDR2 data rates (4 ops per clock) over the system bus, although any operations via the processor FSB will be limited to using only 25% of this speed (ie single data rate).
In real-life operations DDR2 may well provide higher performance compared to DDR when f.ex DMA-ing between memory and other non-cpu peripherals, eg graphics card.

/Sorry for the extended OT :-)

In the US and looking for a 15 inch model (with 128MB of VRAM).
Your price is fair for Europe.

I'm surprised no one has pick it up yet.

Shipping to the USA is not that expensive (but the dollar is still somewhat weak to the Euro at the moment I assume).
If some one in Europe is interested I may change the keyboard and PSU if needed.

True, international shipping is surpringly affordable.
And were it not for the larger size, I'd be on it.
Personally, I'd even prefer a smaller then 15 inch unit, but those don't come with ATI graphics (needed for MorphOS).

Hi,

For the Apple G4 powerbook, I will let you pay me $10 and pay shipping charges to Pennsyltucky to let you get rid of it.

I have no idea what your talking about, so here is a doggy with a small pancake on his head.

MorphOS is a MAC done a little better

I do not understand your statement. You search for a 15" model and what I offer is the 15" model. AFAIK MOS will not run on a 12" Powerbook.
