Rumours of my demise are greatly exaggerated!
« on: January 11, 2012, 12:38:45 AM »
Quick note to all Amigans. It seems my accounts on Amiga.org (and Amigans and Amiga.net) were hacked by person or persons unknown.

Anyway, thanks to the speedy Amiga.org administrators I an now back in control (of my Amiga.org account at least).

Happy New Year

Moral of the story:

For those worried that their passwords may have been compromised, please note that this site's database does not store them in a retrievable form (for the technically minded, it's a randomly-salted one-way hash). Weak, guessable passwords and using the same passwords on multiple sites are what can get you into trouble.

So, make them longer, stronger and have a shorter use-by date on them.

You'd think if a troll were going to go to all that trouble, they'd post something more entertaining and less easily refuted...

Indeed vBulletin hash security is rather good. However to be 100% technically accurate it should be: "in a easily retrievable form". It's possible to attack even salted vBulletin hashes, just a lot slower. Of course you'd need to get hold of the hashes somehow, first.

You weren't here?

@Karlos. Don't forget about the master password thingy FF wants you to always do. Very tempting.

Don't know how this happened Trevor, but please do what you can to prevent it from happening again.  My heart may not take another shock like that one.

Glad to see it was not true.  I guess those few that said "I told you so" have some crow to eat.

Enjoy the meal guys!

I think Piru explained well how the hack may have happened.  I think that Trevor may have been guilty of using the same password on all three sites, or perhaps Trevor's computer has been breached and hacked to obtain his passwords.

What ever the cause, I hope that it is all corrected now, for Trevor's peace of mind, and more than that, I am just glad that it turned out to be a hoax.

I sent in my deposit money for my "First Contact" AmigaOne X1000 today and I am excited that it will not be too long now before it is in my hands.

I wonder if it was just a coincidence that the hoax happened on the same day that the emails requesting the deposits to be paid was sent out?

Reminder to all "First Contact" X1000 buyers, we have a Social Group started here on A.org for you to join and discuss your systems.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Geesh, I step out for the day with just my crappy cellphone and an uncooperative Verizion network. Then all hell breaks out. Glad it got sorted out.

I gotta question...When is the A-Eon website going to be updated?

It has the same info on it that was there over a year ago.

@AmigaDave,

Yes, it's as @Piru suggested I had the same password for all my main Amigan forums.  Fortunately I use other passwords for everthing else. I have now made all the passwords different.

Anyway, it's good to be back as me. ;-)
