Huzzah for classicWB
« on: January 04, 2012, 07:39:13 PM »
After running 3.9 for a while and never really being happy with how pokey it is (plus it looks wretched without a graphics card) I installed Classic WB for 3.1 and it's amazing. Barely recognizable and everything just works nice and smooth.

Get the classicwb 3.x if you have access to 3.9. It's the version I have running on my 600 and works like a charm. So happy with it and does exactly what I need it to do :)

Agreed.  I use ClassicWB Lite on my Minimigs, but I use the 3.9 version on my A4000.  You'll get nicer icons for starters.  :)

Even on ECS 600 the icons and background look nice. Just a shame I have to use a resolution that needs interlacing. I really need to work out how to get the Grafitti mode working with the indivision thing.....

But in any case. A stock 1200 should be able to handle the full version. If you have some goodies in it and access to 3.9 get the 3.x version :)

I understood that the 3.9 version doesn't include scalos is that correct?

Getting 3.9 set up was a bit of a nightmare for me, so Im a little gunshy to delve back into it, but once I have a spare CF card, I might try it again :)

Thats the only issue with the 3.x versions. You need to have a installed and working version of WB 3.5 or 3.9 in order to install the classicwb pack. Bit of fiddling around but worth it in the long run.

And as far as I know it doesn't come with scalos. But I might be wrong. To be fair I have not played with everything in it.

I kinda liked 3.9 but without a graphics card it was ugly and pokey. The CLassicWB versions might fix that of course.

But breaking my system every time I installed a BB, and the annoying "double boot" was not good times.

But we wouldn't be amiga users if we weren't perpetually screwing around and breaking things, right? :)

ClassicWB packs are teh winz0rz!
I use ClassicWB 3.9 on both my A4000D with GREX and my A600 with ACA630@30 and it rox in both systems by tinkering it around for better performance.
In A4000 it also has options of both BB3+BB4, loaded Deneb with newest modules and CGX4 and AfA OS with Ken's Icons and Antialiased fonts and it rox!

Scalos is wonderful for ClassicWB 3.1 stuff but ClassicWB 3.9 is really nice cause it combines the goods ClassicWB but without all these extra stuff that Scalos offers so you can push it more with BB3 and BB4 stuffz :)

The good thing is that it's awesome package for newbies and for advanced users as well :) Also you disable hacks with a click of the button.

Actually, the 3.x versions just require the disks or CD.

The ClassicWB package is missing certain Workbench components.  When you run the installer it then asks for the original 3.0/3.1 floppies or the 3.5/3.9 CD to take the files it needs.

Ah right.... I have done that many installs recently for different things I might have confused them.

But in any case I love classic wb on my 600. They are great packages and there is something to fit every classic system. I was using the GAAE 68K version until I got my accelerator through from amigakit. That was a really well thought out and feature packed version for a stock 600.
