OS 3.9, sysinfo and soft kicking
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:06:13 PM »
Hi,

I have 2 more questions about OS 3.9 and despite my googling i haven't come up with useful answers.

1) How do you assess sysinfo on OS 3.9? I find it useful to see how my accelerator is comparing etc. Do i need to install this as a separate app? Where do i download it from?

2) How do i best downgrade my OS 3.9 to to kick 1.3 or 1.4 to enable compatibility with old floppy disk based games that are not on whdload. I used to use relokick on wb 3.1 but relokick does not seem compatible with OS 3.9 ( i get a red screen) So maybe i should try skick or tude. I have downloaded these but they come as lha files - argh! What do i do with them?

Any advice would be good :)

1) SysInfo was never part of the Amiga OS so you can always download it from Aminet. http://aminet.net/package/util/moni/SysInfo
2) You can check the awesome packages of Bloodwych (ClassicWB) that have the rekicking ability just typing: kick13 under CLI :)

1) In OS 3.9, just double-click the lha file and specifiy where you want it to extract. You shouldn't need anything else.

2) You need to download ClassicWB. That's a add-on.

For hd games tude is a very powerful degrader.

Also, there is no such a thing as relokick being incompatible with OS3.9. It may be incompatible with OS3.9's softkicked Rom. But you still have 3.1 ROMS on your Amiga.

Simple don't allow OS3.9 do its ROM UPDATE + reboot.  Simply hold two mouse buttons "when you first turn on your Amiga" and boot without startup-sequence. From there run your blizkick command and you are all set.

ok so what is my blizkick command??

If i boot with no start-up sequence and have relokick in the floppy drive it only loads as far as a cli screen with a red border??

If you have a PC and a real hard drive then the easy way to set up ClassicWB is to do it on WinUAE.  When you download the package (you'll want the one I've linked to below) there's some instructions to follow:

http://classicwb.abime.net/classicweb/os39.htm

Connect your Amiga hard drive to the PC, mount it as a real Amiga hard drive in WinUAE and prep it, follow the ClassicWB instructions, put the drive in your real Amiga and switch on.  Don't forget to set a screenmode in WinUAE that your Amiga monitor can handle before you switch the drive over.

I'm starting to get confused

Why would i want classic wb on OS 3.9?

I thought OS 3.9 was supposed to be instead of wb 3.1?

If i install classic wb via winuae will i need to format and partition my hd - in which case i will lose OS 3.9

(What cable do you use to attach your 2.5" hd to the pc?)

You don't need ClassicWB on your setup, but if you look at the website you'll see that it is a package that uses OS3.9 to give you an enhanced Workbench with lots of lovely pre-installed software and nice icons (including WHDLoad).  You'll have everything from OS3.9... plus more.

For your 2.5" drive you'll probably need a SATA or PATA cable to go from your drive to your PC's drive interfaces or use a USB adapter.  Remember ti run WinUAE as an Administrator in order to access the "Add Hard Drive" option (otherwise it will be faded out and you can't click on it).

ok thanks,

Is it possible to add the installation of bloodwychs classic wb to OS 3.9 via saving classic wb on a 1gb CF card and then transferring via CF PCMCIA adaptor to OS 3.9 (thereby saving having to acquire an ide usb cable and removing my hd from my 1200)

Of course :)

You can setup a CF disk (for example CF0:) that you can test on WinUAE and once it's ready a simple:

1> Copy CF0: DH0: ALL CLONE

...command will transfer all the CF installation to your real hard drive :)
You can test it out in an empty partition in case you don't like it much but I kinda doubt it. ClassicWB 3.9 is really awesome :)

ok thanks guys, sorry for taking a while to understand this but OS 3.9 is new to me.

(I've set up classic wb on CF cards in the past but that's not really what we're doing here is it?)

So...am i ok to download bloodwych classic wb, extract on PC and then copy to 1gb CF card.

Then via 1gb CF PCMCIA adaptor copy to OS3.9 on my 1200 by typing at the OS 3.9 shell prompt:

 Copy CF0: DH0: ALL CLONE

(ie not using winuae at any point)
Does that sound all ok? :)

Going by a few things youve posted in the last few days it really sounds as if your os3.9 install is pretty screwed up.
Installer should be part of th default install for example, as is unarc (which will deal with lha files "out of the box" when you double click on them).

Being that I dont use ClassicWB I cant be sure, but it sounds like youre asking for trouble by overwriting/supplimenting your OS3.9 setup with classicwb in such a way.

Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.
