amigaos 3.9
« on: November 28, 2011, 08:27:57 PM »
Hi,
I don't know if it's the right place for that or if I should have put it in the amigaos forum, but this is my question.
I've just installed amigaos 3.9 on my winuae, I expected a bright workbench, but instead I only got the blueish classic workbench with amidock.
It's really installed as I'm able to run all the specific applications.
But what happened to the colors and fantastic icons ?
Is it normal with winuae or do i have to make special changes to  obtain my dream workbench ? If you need precisions about my configuration, here they are.
winuae : 2.3.3
KS : v3.1 (a1200) rev 40.68

You need to enable RTG support in WinUAE (to fake a graphics card), have the UAE monitor driver installed in Devs/Monitors and you need Picasso 96 installed - then you can select RTG screenmodes in up to 32bit colour.

You should also be able to select a 256 colour desktop using a native Amiga resolution (640 x 512 etc.) although RTG is faster and generally the way to go.

Without RTG support, OS 3.9 boots in a crappy 4 (8?) colour screenmode.

I'm pretty sure that OS3.9 boots into more colours than that after a standard installation - at least enough to display all the included GlowIcons properly, and usually to make a reasonable attempt at the standard OS3.9 "Get Boinged" background. My guess is 32 colours, but it's so long ago that I don't really remember. One thing to be careful of is to make sure your UAE setup has AGA emulation selected. By default, UAE emulates an A500, which might make OS3.9 boot in a 4-colour mode, since it believes it's actually running on the OCS chipset.

As Aegis said though, RTG is definitely the way to go and is simple to set up in UAE, but even without it, OS3.9 should still be a little more colourful than you're experiencing.

Thank you for your advice, but so far I can't make it work.
I installed Picasso96 with uaegfx, selected a 68030 cpu and gave video memory to RTG, selected it.
But no resolution appears in the picasso96 mode (I learnt the trick about the settings button, so odd !).
With the checkboard, I get a "no board found.Start your monitor first".
Have you any idea about that ? Do I have to start something or is there something wrong with my installation ?
By the way, after upgrading the resolution to 640 * 512 in 256 colors, you're right, it's more colorful.

I think you must activate uaegfx by doubleclicking it (it is in devs/monitors). then the modes should appear.

Thank you for your reply.
Double-clicking uaegfx icon did not produce anything, but when I ran it in a CLI, it said :
Picasso96 could not create graphic board context for "uaegfx".
Please check you Picasso96 installation

It's more verbose than before, but I'm still stuck with it.
I'll check my installation even if I don't where to start. Maybe I can do a reinstallation. What do you think ?
If someone has a clue, I "buy" it.
