A1200 keeps rebooting
« on: November 21, 2011, 04:34:09 PM »
I am not sure if this is a problem with the hard drive or the Amiga.

Whenever it feels like my A1200 just reboots itself. No warning, no error nothing.

When it does the hard drive stops for half a second, just turns off.

Sometimes it does not turn on again and the A1200 goes to the Insert Floppy purple screen and needs to be rebooted with AMIGA AMIGA CTRL.

Setup is: A1200HD with the original 170Mb HD, M-Tec 68030 @ 40Mhz, 8Mb ram and Scanmagic. Tried disconnecting all cables except for mouse, power and monitor. Tried removing scanmagic, tried re-seating ram and accelerator, tried disconnecting and re-connecting hard drive.

It can reboot after 1 second, 5 mins, an hour or 10 minutes. You never know when.

I have another harddrive which i tried for 10 minutes and it worked fine. I am just lazy and dont feel like setting it up right now. Its a 20GB.

Could very well be the power supply. try without the accelerator and possibly the harddrive, leave it running for a while with some tasks.

Consider the possibility that either the data or the power cable of your hd are no longer in pristine condition and they may fail after a while for various reasons. It's the cheapest thing to replace before researching other options.

I had the very same problem in my A600, and it was PSU, do you have a second PSU to test with maybe ?
A1200, Blizzard 1260 + 64mb, Indivision AGA, Subway USB, 8GB CF-HD, PCMCIA network card, OS 3.9.
And a couple of A600\'s :).

Well, I am using an A600 PSU with my A1200HD with accelerator etc.. But to be fair the PSU is pretty heavy, heavier than an A500 PSU.

I do have quite a few A500 PSU's and even a black A1200 PSU lying around.

I will try them out.

I bet that's your problem... the weaker/weakening power supply with all that extra stuff.

Lighter A500 power supply puts out 1.5amp more current and 13watts of power more than the A600/A1200 supply.

I now noticed that it was not even booting, either a black screen or a grey screen. I removed the accelerator and it booted fine. Put accelerator back and it did not. Removed again and fine, put it back and now its working good (for now).

I dont get it.. Yesterday about 2 or 3 times on boot the screen was red and it said that there was an expansion failure or something like that and when i would click continue it would boot but with no fast ram. re-seated the ram about 4 times and it worked fine.

I am now using the A500 PSU which is about 3 times lighter than the A600 one.

There's a light possibility the accelerator itself is beginning to fail. I had that problem once and I had those dreaded red screens. I hope that's not your problem as those red screens can appear for a variety of reasons.
