Zipstik microswitches
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:40:43 PM »
Hi i have a zipstik joystick but the fire buttons don't seem to have the definitive click of the buttons i remember when i was younger. So i thought about changing over the internal microswitch fire buttons. Does anyone know where i can buy these from...are they generic cherry microswitches?

Here'a a pic of the internals of the zipstik if it helps:

The fire buttons (and microswitches) are located on the right side of the picture.

Thanks if you can offer any advice

Pretty standard stuff from some supplier - for example:

(pick from 1457 different...)

It's a good while since I changed the microswitches in a Zipstick, but from memory, they're the "miniature" type as opposed to the "sub-miniature" used in some mice. From a quick look, I would say http://uk.farnell.com/marquardt/1005-0401/switch-changer-1-contact/dp/1831098 is probably fine. If you have to change any of the X or Y ones, probably best to change all 4 or it'll feel a little different in some directions... Just open it up and double-check the actual switch against the spec sheet on the Farnell website.

By the way, Farnell (in Ireland anyway) have a minimum order of €20+postage, so it might be easier to walk into a local Maplin and grab one off the shelf. Bring the old switch with you to make sure it matches!

For example the orange ones on the first page seem to be about the right size. The measures are in the tech info sheet.

Does anybody know if these are the correct microswitches for controlling the x and y axis movement of the zipstik joystick?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-pcs-lot-Micro-Switch-arcade-cherry-microswitch-/250772882489?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a633a8439

The fire button are working ok but the directional (especially left) is playing up, are these switches plug and play?? This is my impression when i look at them inside the zipstik

Yeah, that looks like them alright - they're a standard size and layout so they should just be a drop-in replacement. Having said that, you can get large differences in quality from manufacturer to manufacturer, and they look a tad on the cheap side. But worth a shot anyway for that money!

Also, the actuation force required also varies greatly, so I would recommend changing all 4 switches at the same time, or it'll feel weird in some directions...

Are these just plug and play, the connectors seem to be a very tight fit but i can't see any solder..
