Just to clear up the ton thing here... You're talking about two different things even perhaps without realising. The plural of ton is tons, not tonnes. Tonnes is the plural of tonne, which is a metric unit, whereas ton is imperial or US. Similar, but different. Anyway, when it comes to using singular or plural, you need to consider in what way the quantity of the sentence object is being measured. For example, there is some money in the box versus there are some coins in the box. So, if you think of the mistakes as one steady flow of errors, then there is a ton (or tonne) of them. If you think of them as a discrete quantity then there are a ton (or tonne) of them. Anyway, ton (or tonne) wasn't meant for this sort of thing, which is why problems arise when it's used like that in common usage. I'll take of my annoying hat now
