Easy way to unpack LHA files?
« on: November 05, 2011, 09:23:35 AM »
Hi,

At the moment when i transfer files to my amiga via CF, most of them are lha files.

The only way to unpack them (which i know) is to open the shell and type LhA x $$$$$$.lha DH0:

Is there a program which allows me just to double click on the icon and it will unpack automatically?

I have a amiga 1200, 4mb ram, 3.1 roms.

Thanks

One of the reasons to use a good file manager :)
I use filemaster which is pre installed in AmigaSYS4.  You just select your source file on one side, Your target directory on the other side and click unpack and away it goes.
Any good file manager will have similar functions tho (Dir Opus ect)

well you were asking for lha, not for zip !
zip/unzip is not supplied by default, you have to get it from Aminet, and since you have DOPUS4.16 there are modules available to take care about the various arc formats around.

FYI I have tested many of these GUI unpackers for the Amiga and every single one that I tested had serious bugs.  The most notable being that all the dirs that contain no files don't get extracted.

This completely ruins many games and apps because suddenly many required dirs have vanished! :furious: :madashell:  :pissed:

You are better off using the shell lha command because then you are guaranteed to get a working extraction.

I use Diskmaster2 on most of my Classic Amigas, as I never really took the time to learn something more complicated, like D'Opus.  It was simple and worked, so I just used what worked, instead of learning something new.  It has a menu item choice for extracting LHA files, or extracting files to a destination directory.

On my MorphOS computers, the file manager is built into the Ambient desktop and works very easily and well for extracting LHA files.  One of the nice features in Ambient is that you can see all files and directories within the archive before you extract them, so you can see if the archive is the correct one you are looking for before you extract it.

Remember to download and install the latest LHA with all of the fixes.

Edit: @ChaosLord, have you tried Diskmaster2?  I have not had any trouble with missing directories when unpacking files using Diskmaster2 & LHA.  No problems with Ambient and MorphOS either, so I am surprised to read that "Every Single One" of the gui LHA unpackers you have tried has given you errors.

I use a desktop commodity tool called Dropbox. It lets you configure command line tools to run based on the file extension of the file you drop onto it. I've got it configured so that when I drop .lha files on it, the get unpacked into a temporary directory and from there I can put it where I want it.

Best of both worlds really :D

I remember using DirectoryOpus4 to unpack archives, I think its built in the standard configuration.
Not exactly as easy as double-clicking on the icon, but easier than shell.

Also I think its possible to set up (if you use deficons) to unpack lha files as default action.

@AmigaDave
I used the GUI Unarchivers that come with ClassicWB, AmikitOS, +some other one.  They are all FAIL.   And I am told by multiple ppl that the one that comes with OS4 is bugged out too.

They all look nice and beautiful, but they secretly corrupt your data.

Any that come with OS4 work just fine.  It's DirOpus, not rocket science that lha x * to dir stuff with the GUI aspect...  Never had an issue with any of it, and I mirror and test all of Aminet archives to my OS4 operated BBS on an incremental basis weekly.  I use the command line LHA via script hundreds of times a week to add FILE_ID.diz and readme's to .lha files with zero problems.  Never had a single issue with Amikit either - I recommend you check the button/archiver options and make sure you are using a modern version.

I use DiskMaster 2 (v2.6) with a few extra archiving features for xad, diskwiz, and unrar in the menu. This allows de-archiving almost anything I need. I have included the newest lha and diskwiz in a C directory (to be copied to the C: path) but NOT xad or unrar because of size which can be found on Aminet. Diskwiz handles .dms, .adf etc. with the default path asking for rad: since I don't use df0: anymore. Xad handles anything it has a driver for including .7z now (do not install XFD). It's set up for a 800x600x8 mode by default but can easily be changed with a text editor in DiskMaster2.prefs. Here's the link...
