3com US Robotics 56k modem on amiga?
« on: January 07, 2004, 02:52:50 AM »
hello. Has anyone ever got one of these modems working on their Amiga before? I've tried Miami, and
Genesis and both dial up fine but once it's connected it says something like "36000/ARQ" (I don't know what the last bit means) and on other modems my ISP would ask for a username and then password but all that appears on the screen is a load of misc letters.

anybody know how to get around this?

Hi,

Almost don' know where to start. I have that modem working thru a high speed ser port and work ok.
How do you have genisis set up? Most isp,s you need to run the login script wich asks for account
name and password, once saved it's auto.

It sounds like the modem has connected fine.  The stuff after the CONNECT message changes from modem to modem.   The stuff after the connect speed indicates the optional feature enabled (In your case ARQ error correction).

You said that you normally get a login prompt from the ISP?  Does the dialer have a script that logs you in, or is it trying to go straight into PPP after connecting?

Is the init string suitable for the modem?  I think 'AT &F1' was a good one for USR modems (Add M1 is you want the speaker on, or M0 to turn it off).

Sorry I can't help more, but I haven't used a dial modem in a few years since cable and DSL arrived in my area.  In the past I have had good luck with USR, GVC and Motorola modems on A500, A1200 and A3000 systems as well as PCs.

Hmm.... I used to use a high-speed serial port with my USR Sportster 56k on Amiga.

On the normal port, you need to lock the baud rate to a lower value, otherwise the modem will outrun your port, hence causing gibberish.

I can tell you I used to use
AT &F
AT &H1 &B1 M3 S10=255

Couldn't tell you what those all mean, anymore, though.  I just remember it was fast and stable.  Not sure if the lock baud rate command is in that, or if it was a dip switch on the modem, though.  Been several years since I've endured the torture of dial-up.

Hi,

Just checked settings. dial prefix is set @ AT&F1&C1&D2\r
Sometimes I can hit at 49000+ or so, depends.

Chris

PS: waiting for DSL router & service turn on. Oh Yea.

I've been using the miami init program and also the genesis wizard to try and configure a dial up script and on miami I would normally get a username and password request after connecting but as I said I just get the misc letters. and on the genesis wizard I say that my isp uses a log in script but after it connects it doesn't really tell me anything  :-?

anyway, thanks for your help everyone I'll try your advice later.

I own and have use a USR Courier v.everything for a number years on my Amiga. As already mentioned it would apear that you connect fine.

Also, as mentioned before, try droppin the serial port down lower, try 36400pbs. This should rule out data loss due to a slow serial port having issues with a fast connection.

You also need to find out what kind of authentication protocol/process your ISP uses. Most ISPs use PAP but some cold use CHAP. Neither are compatible with each other. You also have some ISPs which still support a terminal log in, this is where your log in script would come from.

Also try dialing into the ISP with a plain old comms programme (go the BBS daze ;) ). If you just get a load of garbage characters on the screen, it means the ISP dos _not_ support a terminal log in and you wil need to use PAP (or maybe CHAP) for your login.

I have A2000 + TeleTerm and Term 4.3 with USR 56K external COM modem.
I tried to dial a number with default settings but didn't work :(
"TR" LED turns on when I open those programs though.

I had forgotten about this old thread. Try settings above and if using the stock Serial port drop the speed down.

My experience with my USR 56k Sportster was I got the best results using baudbandit.device.  I do not recall if I used 38,400 or 19,200.  On a faster machine I was able to run 57,600, and you will definitely be able to run faster if you use a real serial card (ASDG, for instance.)

I'm running an IOBlix in my 2000 & 4000T so speed is not an issue.

Who is actually offering dialup services these days? Modems usually follow (followed?) the AT-command set. First, make sure the serial speed of the modem fits that of the machine.

Then type in the terminal window "ATZ" which the modem should respond with "OK".

You can dial a number with the "ATD" command, i.e. "ATD0000000" where the zeros have to be replaced by the number of the dialup service. If something like this even exists today.

Modems died out like 15 years ago.

Lol, I only use it for a FAX now. GPFax works well.

This is entirely false.  You would likely be surprised at the number of people still on dial-up for one reason or another, the use of modems for secure transaction and "cash-less" system backups, and so on.
