After The Best GFX Card For My Amiga One XE
« on: October 23, 2011, 03:12:52 PM »
Hello All,

I would like to upgrade my very old Radeon card in my Amiga One XE which has only 64 Meg of ram. I would like a GFX card with at least 128 Meg of ram and if possible 256 Meg of ram card. Can anyone recommend me a GFX card I can get?

I would like to hear your comments on this subject.

Thanks in advance,
Merv Stent

Well, "best" depends on what you want to do with it. I picked up a passively cooled, 128-bit wide Radeon9250 with 256MB, DVI and RGB outputs on ebay for about 10 quid and it works a treat. However, the 9250 card isn't necessarily as fast as some of the 85xx cards for 3D, due to differences in the configuration of the graphics core:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_Graphics_Processing_Units#Radeon_R200_.288xxx.2C_9xxx.29_series

One other thing to note. Last time I checked, the full 256MB of the card was not accessible as it's split into 2 128MB regions. In OS4.0, the full 256MB was mapped, but the system could become unstable if the second region was used. As a workaround, in OS4.1, the second region is not used. That being the case, I wouldn't worry too much about 256MB versus 128MB because the former won't make a difference yet, though in future it may.

the best one based on the current 3D driver state is the radeon 9000 pro with 128Mo which I have in my A1G4 (before I had radeon 7500 with 64Mo, purchased with my amigaone).

Agree on that.

I just replaced my Radeon 9250 with a Radeon 9000 Pro and it sure makes a differenece! It's noticeable faster than the 9250. I'm talking about a Pegasos II tho... the same should apply for your AmigaOne.

Are you guys using PCI or AGP cards? I've tried 2 different AGP 92xx cards and both have failed (can't even get to UBoot).

AGP in my case.

And yes, that CPU fan needs the dust clearing...

AGP here too for both radeon 9000 pro and 7500.

I have a pci 9250 that is working as well but this one is the low cost version (64-bits, much slower than the 128-bits of the 7500 or the 9000 pro !).
