Reading through this thread it is obvious it has degenerated into an OS4 vs MOS bitching thread sadly.

You are wrong. If that's what you think after reading through the thread, you should try reading it again in order to really grasp what it's about...
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

I have watched the whole os4 thing with interest but I always think they really don't want any success at all. If they did, they would find hardware that is inexpensive so that the amount of users using os4 would grow (and with that more developers would develop for it)

2700$ + OS liscence for a computer with no networking and sound (Maybe it will work someday but you get no guarentee of that when you buy it)
Oh yeah there's the X chip that dosn't come with any software to use it
and there's a second core on the processor that may never work.

Lets not forget that 2700$ apparently does not include a monitor, mouse or keyboard, and only gets you 1gig of ram.

To say I don't get it is not enough to really explain how I feel about this. Some people are rushing to their defense and seem angry people are being critical. How could you NOT be critical of this? The whole thing just sounds insane, because it is.

If it was 3k but included at least 4 gigs of ram, keyboard, mouse monitor and everything worked, I wouldn't say anything at all. To charge that much for a half working system that is so crippled right out of the box is beyond insane.

What os4 really needs is a 300$ computer that runs os4 decently, regardless of specs and so on. Even a 500$ computer may have a chance to spread os4, but 2700$ For a crippled half working computer that has no software? I'm a huge amiga fan, but I can't even justify buying a sam board because of the low specs. If huge fans of amiga won't buy them, they have zero change of anyone else being interested.

Its like they purposely don't want it to succeed. Just seems insane to me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Steven

@haywirepc

Sounds like you might like the low cost Amiga OS 4.x laptop coming out then.

Yes I may, I didn't hear anything about a laptop, is there any specs or info anywhere?

Maybe Varisys has a great reputation, but this is an A-eon product and A-eon's reputation is at the very best unproven.

Somebody brought this up on moobunny already, but let's just put it out here - the X1000 is ostensibly "designed for OS4", right? So why pick a bunch of onboard components that you don't already have, or can't easily write, drivers for? Can't blame that on Varisys, and these boards have been around supposedly in the hands of OS4 dev for well over a year.

I'm looking forward to Amiwest this year!

So what you making of Amiwest this year then jorkany?

Did it meet with your expectations?

At $300 you could get 10 (ten!) netbooks for *one* X1000! I think this might be the last nail in the X1000 coffin...

that netbook sounds like a neat thing. strangely it was announced so close after the dabate on x1k price broke off. remember though this is an announcement made at the same stage as "what is x?". not even teaser pictures are available. i would count at least two years ontop the given release date. mind, x1k isnt even out yet and sam460 isnt fully supported.

I can't really see that any of the potential X1000 buyers would suddenly change their minds and go from "I want the fastest OS4 machine possbile, don't care if it's expensive" to "I think I'll get a netbook".

It sure did. No demo of SMP, Xena or Xorro - all of the things that make up "X". Throw in a distraction announcement of a new "mystery device coming soon" to cover for the complete disaster the X1000 has turned out to be. I wonder if Ben mentioned that announcement to Trevor in advance or if he just decided to backstab him with it at the show? Either way it seems to have worked pretty well, nobody gives a crap about the X1000 anymore.

All the X1000 is now is "the fastest OS4 machine possible", there's no "X" which is what a lot of people wanted in addition to the speed. Never mind that the X1000 can't even use most of it's traditional onboard hardware, and it's even being openly touted as just a collector's item by Ben Hermans himself. So much for the "rebirth of the Amiga!"

Beats me, I was busy over the weekend and just got to reading the coverage about two hours ago. The pictures I've seen so far show about five people but even I'm willing to assume there were more than that. Maybe ssolie will be along shortly to tell us that thousands attended, just like last year! lol

I don't understand the shock and outrage.

Before I begin, I'm a long time MOS user on a Peg 2 and have never used AOS 4.x.

But, Trevor can charge what he wants for it.  My gosh, be thankful he even dedicated the time to this project.  You have multiple selections of hw to run AOS and the high end offering is priced more than most can spend, then buy a SAM.

I don't know Trevor or the business side of what they do, but I would bet that he would have to sell quite a lot of 1000's until he broke even in this.  He can't go mass production, since the community of Amiga is so small and divided.

Again, I will never be a user of AOS 4, but let the man set the price of his stuff and let it be.  I hope that he does well and sell lots of them.

Good luck Trevor and crew...

If I was to make a guess as the 'netbook OEM' Hyperion will be using, I would guess it would be LinkBook. They are the only netbook OEM I know of that use a PowerPC processor as their base.

http://www.linkbook.co.za/

http://liliputing.com/2010/05/linkbook-9-inch-netbook-with-a-powerpc-processor.html

Considering their web site is promoting the fact that their 9" is 'almost sold out', I would not be surprised if a 12" model is waiting in the wings for the 9"s to be sold off.

That coincides nicely with Hyperion's "next few months" release of the netbook, and why they didn't have a demo model at the show.

Why? The whole thing has been a disaster in the making and some of the main people involved are just short of criminal. I hope it reaps the reward it deserves.

I haven't followed this much at all and don't know any details of this.

But... If I owned a company and I invested a lot of time and released a product to the market trying to fill a need in a very small market segment, I would need to recoup some of the money invested in the product.  The price is the price.  If you charge to little for a niche product like this, there can be no support and the company will fold.

Again, I have no stake in the AOS 4 world, and have zero plans to enter it, but from what little I have seen...  A man took a risk, invested time, talent, and cash and created something to offer a market.  Not an easy thing for any of us to do...  So I salute him and wish him well...
