I do not believe your memberships + donations + adverts do not cover hosting costs (you are on shared hosting!). perhaps you include your time as expenses too. without you being open about actual figures, we will never know.

Not everyone thinks the users of a site should be responsible for paying for it and constantly asked about giving donations. bearing in mind, it is the contributions from the users that actually give this site any value at all.

You're welcome to  believe anything you like, it does not change the facts though. Amiga.org does have some great user contributions and members. We maintain the hub that allows this to take place.

The fact you avoid giving details about hosting costs and donations, doesn't make it easy to believe you. your hosting might cost as little as $15 a month. If I was to ask for donations for the sites I host I would at least publish the amount needed/received, so people get an honest picture, and it doesn't look like im just trying to make a few quid.

@buzz

We invested considerable money in buying the site and maintaining it with a nice fast robust hosting plan. If we were just trying to make a few quid we are in the wrong business because that is not what happened. Donations to the site are always visible on the donations page. We acquired Amiga.org first and foremost to keep it available for the Amiga community because Wayne was considering shutting it down.  We thought it was important to keep it available for the members that enjoy it and use it daily.

You have asked for donations/subscriptions to help pay the hosting, not to regain your initial investment though. You still have not said how much your hosting is a month. Which donation page lists the donations btw? I missed that, but would be interested in having a look.

The 'View donations' link is in the Quick Links menu. But only when you're [strike]on the donation page[/strike] not on the main page.

I don't see any amounts on there, and I'm guessing it's just a list of names from those who didn't want to be anonymous. not quite the information I was after. According to that page the last money received was an unknown amount in April 2010.

I give up.

edit.
(ok i found the amount now, does that include anonymous donations?) - im guessing it doesn't include donations of a certain amount (which are now subscriptions). anyway, fine, you need/want the money for whatever reason. I've made my point. As someone who hosts some sites myself, I manage to do it without asking visitors to pay my hosting.

Somebody (who exactly?) coughed up some $10,000 for buying this site...

I plan to live a long time, even if I lower my expectations to the age of 71, a one-off payment of $30 translates to $1/year.

Now, let's say I agree that "lifetime" for me will mean 30 years.

If I don't fulfill my term by dying prematurely in say, 20 years...

Will my estate be refunded the unused portion of my subscription (i.e $10) ?

I haven't noticed any C=USA threads in quite a while.

I would equate that to a certain person being banned for life and his little band of mindless followers have given up on starting, or perpetuating all the whining and moaning about C=USA all the time (thank god).  Plus, things don't appear to be so rosy for C=USA on their own forums from the little I have read over there, so some of the blind followers of Barry's camp might be having second thoughts about the path they have been praising so much for the past 6 months or more and have slowed down at starting new forum threads, or news items.

We probably should not be discussing it, as it will wake the sleeping idiots on both sides and get them posting nonsense here again.

Back on topic:  I object to people posting here telling others NOT to donate, or purchase any of the available subscriptions to support this site.  I have been here for a long time (lurked here even longer before I became a member) and I would like to see it survive and get better over time.  I don't expect the owner(s) to run it as a charity and I don't care if they make a profit from the donations.  If you don't want to donate, fine, but don't talk others out of donating and jeopardize the future of the site.

I don't believe I have told people not to donate, I have just questioned it from my own viewpoint. There is a big difference to me between "need money for hosting help!" and "Need money for beer!" requests - and the requests here are always for hosting, and I struggle to understand the difficulties here - it would be easier for people to make an informed decision should all the info be available. It still seems to be a "secret" how much the hosting costs.

The minority most vocal against donations have never donated even $1. Premium Membership comes with most donations and gives additional site benefits.

I have donated several hundreds of dollars towards several amiga related charities and bounties during the past decade, without expecting much (if anything at all) in return, but indeed never to the maintenance of amiga.org. I'm not against donating per se, but in this case I'm just not sure who gets the money and for what exactly. I can see how Wayne Hunt, as an individual doing this on his spare time with his own money, would appreciate a cash contribution to cover the costs (and maybe even a little something on top of that as appreciation for his work and time spent). But in this case my understanding is that it's a commercial corporation(?) having no problems spending $10,000 to take over the site. As far as I can see, there are 69 domains hosted on IP address 174.132.193.125 over at HostGator.com. Shared hosting has never been as cheap as it is today, I have a few shared sites myself, paid out of my pocket, it's actually not that much of a big deal. I like the Amiga.org site, it's an important institution in the amiga community, and I appreciate the efforts being put into it by the owner, webmaster, admins and moderators. I am glad someone (who?) bought it to keep it alive. But as I said in my previous post, I don't quite understand your selling point here. Charity towards commercial corporations doesn't compute; I have reacted in the past when people suggested *donating* money to Hyperion/OS4, I have also reacted when people suggested *donating* money to the MorphOS team. Commercial entities don't ask for charity, they sell products. Non-commercial entities like AROS (or individual developers releasing their software for free) is another thing. At least this is how I see things, but I am perfectly aware that not everyone agrees with my views. And no, I'm not "trying to talk anyone out of donating" like amigadave wrote, I just don't get why I should give you my money. But now you speak of "additional site benefits", and this could be interesting. This sounds like something that could be considered a product even? If you only would tell us a little more of what to expect as a premium "Lifetime Membership" supporter, I may even consider giving $30 to whoever gets it.

:)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)
