Which Amiga manual teaches you how to set these up?

To clarify , I understand how to set these things up within individual icons, what I'd like to know is if there is a way (without using DOpus as a WB replacement) to set up Work Bench so that every time I click on a file with a certain extension and that would in turn always launch the related app. I.E. a JPG file would launch an image viewer of my choice.

Mind you, I do not want to have to edit every single icon just to make this happen.

It's not something that I've ever delved into, but IDer sprang to mind from its use on CUAMIGA cover cd's.

Yes, I looked it up on Aminet, and it sounds like it might just be what I was looking for, thank you!!!

Which version of AmigaOS are you using here? DefIcons functionality came with the OS as of 3.5 and there's a preferences tool for defining file types, their icons and which default tools to use for opening files of a given type.

I was on 3.5, but my system began to flake out so I'm now back to 3.1.

Really? Strange, for me 3.5 was very stable. So much so that I didn't upgrade to 3.9 for quite some time.

Oh well, I'm pretty sure DefIcons is available for vanilla 3.0/3.1 too.

Well let me put it this way. I was running OS 3.5 on a 600 using a 25Mhz 030...

I may well have another go at it with my 1200, but for the 600's sake, I think I better stick with conserving those resources the best I can...

...though I'm always up for tips and suggestions as to how to make 3.5 fly on lower end systems.

I won't even get into 3.9...

That remains on my Amithlon box(es) and there I believe it shall stay (even though it does play with my 1200's 060 just fine.)
