Which sam to buy?
« on: October 02, 2011, 06:39:19 PM »
Hi, i've just been given premission from the wife to buy myself a sam (providing I sell off some of my old stuff!)

Problem is im not sure which to get- should I get the sam460ex basic system

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=37_86&products_id=1040

and add a radeon 4650 graphics card along with 2gb of ram for a grand total of £841.96

OR...

Do I wait and buy an amigaone 500 with the radeon graphics card for £944.47

Also... the sam from amigakit says DVDRW and SATA 4-port card is an extra £34.99 so do I presume that this computer has a standard dvd drive or even none at all!!???

Please give me some advice...

If you're interested in modern OS4 solution, then I'd say:
- buy just the Sam460ex main board
- buy other components you prefer/like

Build your system around it, it's much more fun this way.

even if you added the dvd drive and sata card for £34.99 ontop of the Radeon and 2GB ram, it would still be slightly slower.

its 1GHz compared to the 1.15GHz on the AmigaOne 500.

the only other difference is the case.

if thats ok, and you have a mouse and keyboard already, the basic system will be cheaper.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Actually this topic is really interesting for me, as I too am looking to buy an OS4 machine.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, im afraid doing it myself is not an option (am not great at that sort of thing)

I guess i will need the DVDRW, so the difference will be around £65. For that £65 i will get an amiga mouse worth £13.99, an acube t-shirt, a larger hd and 1.15gz as apposed to 1gz so i suppose the amigaone 500 works out as the best option, even though I would like to do it on the cheap.

I would have thought that the basic sam would have a dvd drive as standard...

Adding all the parts up makes the amigaone 500 seem competitive even though after shipping it will come in at over £950!

You don't spend much money in a graphic card, because the current Amiga OS hasn't 3D drivers for it. The DVDDrive you can use one external, for example (although I not tested) a DVDdrive with a case, a old drive from PC, I used for my Sam an external HP DVDRW drive, also you buy a big harddisk of 1 Tera, because you don't install big Amiga games, there are fews, and to see movies, well, for codecs and screen size the Amiga players don't play them, the most important is the board with a fast CPU to move the 3D games and some 2D games (battle for the wesnoth big maps) and some movies.
512 or 1GB of memory is good more well, I don't think that the Amiga OS4 and the games the use.
The keyboard and mouse you can buy that you like you can see the some list to hardware that runs fine in Amiga OS4, there are stickers for fulfill the Winlogos.
Amiga 500 with ROMs 1.3-2.05 and M-Tec AT 500 with hard disk and 4MB Ram.
WinUAE + Original OS 3.5&3.9
Sam440ep 800 MHZ + OS 4.1 F.E.
Sam460ex 1 GHz + OS 4.1 + Update 6. K.O.
MacMini 1.5 GHz + MorphOS 3.9
PowerBook G4 1.65 + MorphOS 3.9

Hi Steve, I'd go for Radeon 4650 right off the bat (Han's driver is workiong great) & the 460ex (non lite) as you'll need all the Mhz possible to smoothly run some AGA games under glUAE or RinInUAE seamlessly as well as many larger DOS games under DOS Box.

Basic sysrem is 15% slower. For same performance as AmigaOne 500 sys you need to get the full SAM 460 board. All in one its almost the same board, and its recommended that anyway get the Radeon 9250 pci. Later on, when 3D Driver is done, you could get SATA PCI card and RadeonHD PCI-E

So, best buy (in terms of price) is this kind of system (offered by Acube)
Sam460ex - Lite
CPU CLOCK 1 Ghz
Case LC-Power 2039MB-MBS
512 MB DDR2
Radeon 9250 PCI - 128 MB
HD SATA2 Western Digital 500 GB
AmigaOS4.1 pre-installed

Price EUR 774,50 (937.15 EUR including VAT where applicable)

Other option is to go for AmigaOne 500 - you can always change to another case
