1084S-P known problems?
« on: January 05, 2004, 02:05:57 AM »
Are there any known problems with this monitor? I have a few, and use them for just about everything from watching tv, to playing my nes. I also use it for my amiga of course.

I just want to prepare for any problems that might arise just incase.

Yes the 1084 evetunally drops out the red color very often. We had 2 with this symptom, but we just sold one. I've seen others do the same thing.

Both of mine still work perfect, and one of them
has seen fairly heavy use, even surviving
a heavy impact from it's previous owner.

Unfortunately, my 1802 didn't fare as well...

-edit-

As far as known problems, they seem to be few
and well-documented. A quick google should find
you some sites.

There have been some (occasional) issues with solder-joints on the power supplies, but I've got one right here that's working great.

Due it's age those electrolytic capacitors may dry out.. This can be usually detected as incleased Humming (50/60Hz) noise on sound.

But IIRC most typical issues were cold soldering on Flyback transformer and Power supply.. And some of those monitors had notoriously weak power swithes, the tend to break on normal use.. These tend to cause flickering, sensitivity to shock and total non-working.

My switch went out on mine years ago. Just wired it ON and continue to use it that way. Has worked fine for me.

The ones I've worked on usually have dry/cracked solder joints on the 9 way D-range connector at the rear of the monitor.
Movement of the monitor cable creates stress fractures on the solder joints.

As mentioned above, dry joints on the line output transformer are also very common, and possibly the same for the chopper transistor and other power devices.

One of my 1084S dropped the red colour as Cybereye said.  That resulted in a yellow coloured display.  Been too slack to look at this one yet :-)
Does anyone know a quick fix to this common problem??

yes . . like our #### too :-)

Anyway, i own an A1081 (19 years old, once repaired 10 years ago) and an A1084 working both.

The strange is that the 1081 works better than the younger 1084.

Both uses same chassis but different CRT.

The chassis used by those monitors, are rock solid and easy to fix (any TV set technician can do the job) exept the external trimmers/knob and switches. . . .a little technical miracle IMHO :-)

Ciao

PS- i've forgotten . . . Wellcome back to AOrg . . .JesterDev :-D

Hi Castellen

beleive me . . .if you aren't be able, with a very cheap repairs, every TVset technician, is be able to fix it. (could be a simple dry/cracked solder joints or the matrix IC)

An european seller, sells 1084S NOS at 125 EUR . . .so!

Pity that i've lost the occasion, when Vesalia (some months ago) sold some M1438 NOS for only 54 EUR :-( . . . .sold out ALL at the speed of the light

Ciao

@ Castellen

I had a Microvitec Multiscan which dropped its red colour and the problem is solved by a slap or two on the side or top of the monitor - not the most technical solution, but it works!  :-o

Slap it on the side a few times. That usually works for a short period of time. After a while slapping doesn't help anymore though.
