AMosaic or Other 68000Web Browser wanted
« on: September 18, 2011, 04:31:55 PM »
Afternoon all,

I'l trying to get a web browser for a new setup I'm working on,
It's an Amiga 2000, ECS, 3.1 ROM Running OS 3.1, with a GVP Scsi Board, 6mb Ram + 1mb Chipmem and a GoldenGate 2+ ISA Bridge with NE2000 Network card. (Was 8mb Ram but removed 2mb to make space for ISA Bridge/Network card.

I'd like to go online with this setup - I've seen there is a version of AWeb 3.5.09 for 68000CPUs on Aminet, however this crashes for me with the dreaded 80000004 guru.

I wondered if anyone knows where I can get AMosaic 1.2 or another browser that can be used on this setup

Cheers in advance,

Robert.

The source for AMosaic 2.0 is here: http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/MosaicSrc
No idea where or if there is a ready-compiled binary though.  As you're running 3.1 you should be able to find a slightly better browser than that!

Try using the Aweb 3.5.09 68000 recompile from the BB3 archive here:

Seems like the Wikipedia page has a link to the old version, but I couldn't get it to run:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMosaic

Otherwise check the old AMosaic page:

If you can get a copy of Aminet CD 24 it comes with a full version of IBrowse 1.2, the last IBrowse which worked on 68k. It would be better to use than AMosaic. I have a LHA of it if you want it.

I don't get why there are negative reactions against AMosaic. I actually liked AMosaic, even though it is a bit slow on an 68000 especially when rendering many or big pictures with many colors (but this is mainly the speed of the Datatypes it is using, so IBrowse probably wont help much there).

I have a copy of AMosaic and AMosaic_NoNet on an A590 that is currently not connected to any computer let alone one connected to the internet and I am not sure, whether it would be legal to send the file to you. I might have it on the "Meeting Pearls" or "Gateway" CD-ROMs that where popular in germany in 1995.

IBrowse is better because it can decode images progressively. It is not faster but overall experience is better.

I still have the original IBrowse 1.02 package here. If someone is interested I can give it away for free.

Am I missing something here? Why can't this guy use the latest demo version of Ibrowse 2.x on his A2000?

I use the latest version of Ibrowse (2.4 I believe) on my A1200 68030, its the only stable browser I could find. Voyager and Aweb always crashed and mosaic couldn't seem to deal with any web pages I tried to navigate too.

IBrowse 2.x needs a 68020 or higher, and Robert's A2000 only has a 68000. IBrowse 1.22 was the last version of IBrowse that will run on his setup. AMosaic and Aweb will also work. None of them are particularly stable, and Aweb probably renders pages best of the three choices.

I never tried it on a 68000, but AWeb is pretty crash happy. Especially with images on. Disable images, and it improved a lot in my experience. (besides, loading them on a 68000 is going to be uncomfortable in any event)

I see a lot of posts about crashing with AWeb. Are you sure you configured this program correctly?

Actually IBrowse 1.22 is very stable and not so much different from IBrowse 2.x series. It lacks Javascript and tabbing and crashes in low mem situations but generally it never crash. Too bad there are no websites IBrowse could display properly at this age...
