1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

I forgot something: Greece is the only country with 12.000.000 people, that has 157 free TV stations!

Now, compute at least 2x amigas in every tv station (It is true, I know this because it is my job  :-D  ) and you have AT LEAST 300 amigas WORKING right now in Greece !

I personally happen to know some tv stations that have 5 or 7 amigas (for titling etc.) on their Edit Suites.  :-)

And don't forget. This is not WAR. We aree just trying to find out how many Amigas were sold  :-)

Here in Sweden I have seen numbers about 200 000 units sold and "Datormagazin" was Swedens largest computermagazine in the early 90's with about 140 000 readers! And they wrote only about Amiga :-) (At the time...)

7 millions ? sounds little but it aint :) .

anyway if 5 of thoose millions went to germany then why was amiga so popular in the uk? or countries like FINLAND ..

germany
uk
denmark
finland
sweden
norway
netherlands

is that an OK ranking of the most sold amigas in scandinavia + germany and UK ? (excluding france etc)

amiga sold bad in norway but sold generally great if you compare it to SEGA or whatever, but it was like 1 of 10 people at our school had an AMIGA back when i went in the 7th grade and up ..

sure it might not mean anything but it was pretty cool :) ..

but one thing for sure , if sweden only sold 200.000 AMIGA's then Amiga was small in sweden but that doesnt add up as AMIGA had an own big office there (which was infact ripped off quite a few times) but its more like... WE are so small atm (max 10.000 INET users) so theese numbers 200k etc is beyond our grasp...

i would love to know exact numbers , but i am sure certain people here would use that against us later on.....GRRRR
Whats up with all the hate!

Who said there were 5 million in Germany ?
It may be that so many went through C=-Germany, but that doesn't mean that all
of them were actually sold in Germany .....

If we take 7 million I would come up with this:

Germany : 3 Mio
UK: 1.5-2 Mio
Scandinavia: 0.5 Mio
Benelux/France : 1Mio
Southern europe: 0.5-1Mio
Eastern europe (after 1990): 100k (not counting 2nd hand).
US/Canada : 200k (mainly Ax00-models)
Africa/Australia/.... :not worth a mention

Amiga users != Amigas sold

I bought my A500 from 2nd hand market, upgraded to 2nd hand A600,
which was finally replaced by 2nd hand A1200.
My Amigas: A500, Mac Mini and PowerBook

I think your very much underestimating the Newtek  Video Toaster, which still does a fine job for titles and such...

@jeffimix

You most be kidding .....

I mean sure those Bread-ovens were nice and powerfull (and maybe even are),
but they were also extremly expensive, only suitable for real pros when they were still
sold new.

Doubt they ever sold more than 10k, and surely nowhere near 6-figure numbers...

And Amigas weren't really popular over their outside the pro-video-sector.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT...

I live in an area of two small towns of about 20,000 and 30,000 respectively.  I belonged to an Amiga users club of about 20 people.  I was the ONLY one who owned a Video Toaster.  In the state of Ohio there are litterally thousands of small towns.  I would guess you are all seriously underestimating the populararity of the Amiga platform here in the U.S..  Newtek is still in business selling Toasters for PC platforms and they ain't cheap.  It would probably be easy enough to email them and find out how many Amiga/Toaster platforms they sold.  They can probably tell you how many toaster boards they sold too.  Figure that with the average in the club I belonged to and you will get a rough idea how many were sold here.  The demise of the Amiga in the U.S. had more to do with the insane business practices of the people who ran Commodore than the quality of the platform.  After all it was doing things the PC could never do without a $1,000.00 USD worth of aftermarket boards.  It may surprise you to know that there are still active Amiga user groups around the U.S..  I am just thankful that the European community is and was an avid supporter of the Amiga platform.  One final note.  I am an amateur radio guy and I attend the worlds largest Ham Radio/Electronics/Computer  show and convention held in Dayton, Ohio every year.  The outdoor flea market alone has over 2,000 vendors on the average and for the past ten years there has always been someone selling used Amiga stuff and they are not cheap.  Don't count us short here.  On ebay the most of the Amiga equipment sold is from the U.S. and I am not counting software because the bulk of that semme to be from the UK.  Most of the software seems to be from people dumping games.

I think 20 million is a pretty fair estimate.

From the numbers I remember Germany and the UK had 5 million *each*.  Germany was the biggest for a long time but I remember the UK did eventually overtake them.

Oh, and Veroia doesn't have the same income/person as full of tourists cities like Rodos or Athens

@Animagic
What do you mean, exactly? That we people in Veroia are, way too poor to own an Amiga?!? I was into computers and most of my childhood friends too. It's just that only one or two of them had Amigas.
No offence intended, but your argument regarding the income is purely pathetic! You are telling me that a labour or general worker has a better life in Athens than in Veroia? With a rent around 80% higher? Which are the Rhodites you are reffering to? The owners of hotels and big restaurants? Well, people with such big bucks, can have a high income/person kind of life anyway. The rest will starve wherever they live.
Regarding your 8 Amigas I have one question  to ask you --> how many of them did you get before '96 and how many afterwards? At around '98 you could buy amigas (1200's) for nothing (just because none wanted them).

I don't mean to start a personal war with you, it's just that I don't like being PATRONIZED!

BTW most of these "free stations" in Greece are not licenced, and therefore, illegal.

I'll guess at 2,089,452 - no make that 2,089,453 -I forgot someone! No make it 27,879 - that seems more probable. But what would Eyetech reckon? After all they NEED to have some idea don't they?
I bet it's closer to 11,209. Or maybe not.

The truth is nobody knows because you can't really define the question can you?

What's the point of all this guessing?

Cheers,

JaX

Firts of all: the INCOME thing is not mine. According to Kronos "@Animagic
Looking at the size of Greece, the average income of it's population, and how
uncommon computer were in the late 80s/early 90s compared today (just like
in the rest of the world), I can only doubt that..."

Don't make this a personal or "Veroia vs Rodos" matter ok?
And btw, why didnt YOU reply to Kronos about that low income thing?  ;-)

Second: I own my 5x A2000s since 1990. My 3xA1200s bought in 1992-1993.

Third: THERE IS NO TV STATION IN GREECE THAT IS ILLEGAL !

The tv station I work has permission to broadcast since 1993. All the pirate tv stations have been shut down since 1997. All the remaining tv stations broadcast legal since 1998. Do some homework before you start the bulls*&t an offend 2000 people working in these stations!

Thank you!
