SmartFileSystem (SFS) freezes my A4000 - help

I wonder why my Amiga freezes with SFS installed suddendly.

Surfed and chatted thru AmIRC, then my net connection suddendly stopped and my Amiga freezed at some point.

Then when rebooting, I got SFS requesters in bootup sequence, saying that I have a corrupted HD0:

When I try to delete my logg directory in AmIRC and even tries to startup Ibrowse, my AmigaOS v3.9 hangs/freezes completely.

I've tried SFSsalv and everything else, but no good results there either Is there a possibility to fix this, or is my HD corrupt?

SFS partitions are unrepairable.

If your system crashes when you start IBrowse it could be because the
binary of IBrowse is corrupt... Either your filesystem went belly up
or your HD is dying.

Well, we've checked the drive on a PC with a HD check program for my Samsung 60GB hd and we didnt find any errors.

Yes, my system crashes when starting IBrowse and when trying to delete something at all from the logg dir in AmIRC.

Something went wrong.

My SFS version was one of the first versions.  I haven't changed, and now I've formated my Sys: partition and updated it with the latest SmartFileSystem update wich came about 3 days ago to Aminet.

My Amiga is:
Amiga 4000 060/PPC, 128mb RAM, Voodoo 3 3000 (MediatorPCI4000Di), Ariadne_II, DelfinaDSP, 60GB Samsung HD, 36x IDE CD-ROM+++

My Software was:
AmigaOS v3.9 with BoingBall 1 and PowerIcons, 1024x768x32bit  screenmode

I have my suspicions about IBrowse2.3 and SFS. Here the cache can corrupt the filesystem, especially on faster systems. I'd advise anyone who uses IBrowse cache to run it from a non-SFS partition, or a special cache partition of its own so it can be quickly formatted. This 'bug' really needs to be investigated.

Once any SFS partition is corrupt, you must rescue the files and then format. There is no way to fix it. That's why the IB issue is so serious.

i've tried, only for testing pourpose, to use a SFS partition for the IB 2.3 diskcache (for 2 days).

SFS, due its slow delete speed, isn't compatible in a cache enviroment.

Here with the last SFS on a slow 040, doesn't freeze the system but slow down IB even with 400 buffers.

Probably with more buffers . . . .

yes SFS 1.214 that as already said, doesn't crash the system but it is slow for diskcaching pourposes.

I've switched back to PFS3 18.5.

The best option for all the diskcache pourposes, is PFS3 with at least 400 buffers and the .deldir setted to 0. (no deldir)

I dont really want PFS3, because PFS2 destroyed my whole HD.. wich aint funny at all

Been using SFS on my harddrive for several months now with Ibrowse no problems but my Cache and download directories are all on a separate partition for safety. Testing SFS and PFS found SFS to be much faster on my system with most things. BTW you can have both installed on your Hard drive.

Also make sure your first drive in the system has the newest version of SFS installed in the RDB otherwise things get messy. Master if ide or drive 0 if SCSI doesn't matter what the boot drive has on it as long as the first drive seen by the system has it installed.

I've been using SFS for about six months now and run iBrowse 2.3, can't say I've had any problems with the cache, in fact I've found browsing the cache under SFS much faster than it was previously under FFS.

the same here from years.

I've downloaded and installed the last SFS only for testing pourpose that still slower than PFS3 in quite all operation..

PFS2 is bugged . . .avoid it :-)

PS- if you can, make a partition with PFS3 ONLY for diskcache use and set the deldir to 0 . .(SetDelDir PARTname: 0) .you will fly :-) (and if you have a lot of mem, set the buffers to 600)

Can you post your SFS config (and version)?

Mine is:

SFS 1.214 with 300 buffers

SFSconfig <>NIL: PartitionName: 32 8192 107 5 1 COPYBACK
