My adventures using my 1200 in VGA mode. Also MP3s!
« on: September 08, 2011, 09:19:21 PM »
Terminally broke at the moment, so haven't been able to procure a proper monitor yet.

I am able to display using the VGA adapter I have, so some experiences from that:

Workbench looks pretty good in dblPAL hi res mode and the multiscan productivity mode. Very enjoyable actually.

A couple of games plays nice with VGA modes (Gloom, Nemac IV, Testament II. Doomattack)

Found an app called "modepro" which lets deluxe paint and a few others work. Managed to get a few more games to work (EOB 1 and 2, Dune 2, Sim city, UFO, Civilization and Colonization)

So at least I can use the girl, even though its not that functional.
The alternative is composite to an NTSC tv, which, at best is grey. Mostly it doesn't do a damn thing :)

On the upside, threw some MP3s on my amiga and I was surprised. Sure, its not amazing quality but it still sounded pretty good (Iron Maiden's Powerslave, if anyone was wondering)

Don't forget, ScummVM AGA also supports VGA mode so that will bring another 30 odd games to the table ;)

I'm currently running my WB in MultiScan (while I await the IndivisionAGA Mrk2) and it looks pretty good.

If you like dblpal then try this.

Could I use a real Roland MT32 for sound? (I have one)

I'm waiting for a MIDI adapter to pop up for sale in the US.

I do have a usb MAUDIO Uno and a Subway adapter, but i have never tried that combo.

Poseidon docs says it supports simplemidi.class & camdusbmidi.class

My A1200 is only a 030-40mhz and my HDD only goes 900K/sec or so.

thanks.

Hiya,

Nope, I haven't bothered to code in any native MIDI support (too lazy).

Your HD rate is very slow, I'm getting about 4.5 MB/s out of my 1200.

Most of the older games (eg DOTT) should still run ok on your setup if you disable the MIDI music emulation and keep the playback rate at 8K.

Bummer about the MIDI. Do you think you'll add MIDI support in the future? That would be a killer feature.

I don't know why my 1200 is so slow on the HD. I have a 4xEIDE'99 and a a SSD drive.

It was a little faster with the CF, but not much... nowhere near 4.5 MB/SEC

Thanks fort the hard work!

If you want amazing quality, do a quick convert to ADPCM4. I've played them at 230kbs, 27400khz. (on a double scan screen, they will play back at 56khz). It takes about 10 seconds to convert an MP3 using 'quick media converter'.

Listen to 'Lightshaft' and 'we come in peace' by Demo group elude for a qality comparison. The compression is quite good, and they can be zipped/lha'd further.

I'm using a VGA CRT monitor here with that VGA dongle. This thing is great for Workbench and I have made a custom double NTSC driver which gives me 672x562 in 94 hertz interlaced (there's NO flicker and it's faster than Productivity mode). Useless for 15Khz stuff, of course ;)

It's better to convert them to WAV format. For double scanned screens they don't have to be down sampled (both 44Khz and 48Khz are not a problem). For 15Khz screen modes use SOX (or any other program that offers high quality down sampling) on the peecee to down sample to 28Khz. That sounds quite good (as long as you have a calibration file).

Anyway, don't use 4 bit ADPCM, it's too lossy. Use 8 bit ADPCM (very good) or 16 bit WAV, and never let the music player do the down sampling. High quality down sampling is probably not what those players do (it's beyond the scope of the players, and it's quite heavy on the cpu), use proper high quality down sampling.

I dont know if youve resolved your amiga monitor "problems" yet, but while browsing aminet I found this: http://aminet.net/package/game/patch/Frontier2AGA

Looks like you might be able to add frontier to the list of games you can play on a VGA monitor :)
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.
