classic OS 4.1 "Virtual Memory"
« on: September 04, 2011, 04:39:12 PM »
on hyperion illustration says that OS 4.1 for classic has paging abilities. Does anyone knows how to enable paging? or is it enabled by default?

If you have a ZorRAM or DKB 3128 it is enabled by default.  If you create and automount a SWAP partition on the Cyberstorm PPC SCSI controller or a PCI SATA card then it is also enabled.

The Classic FAQ posted on the Hyperion Forums has a very good section on this...

Thanks.

I've seen there is no way for a blizzPPC without mediator to have paging enabled....

Tried any os3.x VM type programs? Gigamem 3.12 has served me well when Ive needed more RAM than my amiga physically has. It's 68k though, so I dont know if it's of any use to you.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

As I understand, they don't support onboard ide because of PIO 0 and no DMA, Also I think lack of DMA is the reason they don't support FastATA too besides it has fast PIO modes. MAybe FastATA is because of lacking drivers also...

I guess they don't support slow IDE because they didn't want to bother. PPC hardware has decent SCSI anyway.

At least your BPPC still works  :) Mine got fried by a weird power fluctuation a few years back :( Tried to get some compensation for it, but was told that such old computer gear isnt worth anything (175mhz processor to them seemed archaic and not possibly worth anything). Best they could offer me was a $40 rebate on my next bill :/ Was quite disappointing that they didnt consider ebay any sort of indication of value (only mainstream source to get ahold of such hardware I could offer them).

p.s.

1000 posts here at amiga.org,.... I officially have too much free time  :)

and now we come to the real problem!
Yes, my blizzard has a decent scsi, but that is NOT supported by OS 4.x!!!!!
So, on BlizzPPCs only internal pio 0 IDE is able to boot OS4.x ..... and as for FastATA.. don't think there is drivers to enable faster speeds....
only Cyberstorms PPCs scsi is supported.
Thing is, that blizzard can have 256MB ram, Cyberstorm only 128...
Oh well.... you can't have it all!
:D
