If it was free or extremely cheap, sure why not.

If you had some cash to burn on this, go with (my personal favorite) the Warp Engine 3040, or the Cyberstorms.

The fast local memory, FAST SCSI, and 040 or 060 make a 3k perform at a very usable (relatively speaking) level.  It will behave like a new machine, where a a3640 will not be noticeable for most daily functions over the 3640.

Good luck!

I wouldn't spend that for a rev. 3.0 3640 personally.

I sold a few for $50 each a while back and some were rev. 3.1 and 3.2.

Even if you don't want to shell out for something like a Cyberstorm, there's a lot better options than the 3640, which doesn't have any onboard fast RAM like sane accelerators do. I have a GVP G-Force 040 with 8MB RAM, and that's served me quite nicely.
Computers: Amiga 1200, DEC VAXStation 4000/60, DEC MicroPDP-11/73
Synthesizers: Roland JX-10/MT-32/D-10, Oberheim Matrix-6, Yamaha DX7/FB-01, Korg MS-20 Mini, Ensoniq Mirage/SQ-80, Sequential Circuits Prophet-600, Hohner String Performer

If you find a 3640 cheap, absolutely upgrade from the 030.  They are good for what they are and very stable.

They just don't give the full speed potential of the 040 since there is no onboard RAM and you don't get the faster onboard scsi that most cards have.

This will be you best bet.  Save for the warp engine, it will be so worth it.

You will not believe how must faster your 3000 will be.

Take care,

I have A3000 that is native 68030-25. It runs an Amiga Technologies A3640 rev3.1 that I got for $100. Maybe a little pricey but it was surely worth it for my machine that runs OS3.9 and some basic productivity applications. There are not very good accelerator options anymore from a cost standpoint. Thus I took the low road with the A3640.

The WarpEngine 3040 is fine in a 4000 too.

I've got one in mine and the only difference is that it can only hold up to 64MB and has angled sockets for the RAM.

If you're upgrading from only motherboard RAM to motherboard plus 64MB, you'll still be very happy.

I tend to favor the A3640 but I'm biased since my A3640 now gives a WarpEngine a good run for the money. (Some extra memory would be nice though).

Even if you get close on ram speed(which motherboard ram is still slow),your still missing the nice warpengine scsi and the 64 or 128MB capability.. its way faster than the 4k motherboard ide. it can get close to 10MB/s.
The warp engine is way better than any 3640,overclocked or not.
the pals/gals on the 3640 run so hot they can near burn you lol. i imagine at 40mhz they are nice and warm(are yours heatsinked?). Also the cut the jumper/delay line hack delays access to ram if memory serves(pun intended) and you are still always accessing motherboard ram with delays, unlike the warpengine with proper ram.
Not to mention most all the 3640's rev 3 and 3.1(and some 3.2's are STILL wrong) need capacitors soldered correctly, some are usually backwards.i've fixed many that caps have leaked on and have eaten traces.

Is your 040 chip a 33 or 40mhz part? (sorry to hijackthis thread).

Like heiroglyph said, its a great upgrade if its cheap though, sure beats 030/25

as far as 040's go,the warp engine is one of the best, most reliable boards around.

mech :)
