Graphic corruption in demo
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:05:04 PM »
Hi

Forgive me if this is a stupid question but I'm very much a rookie when it comes to amiga stuff :)

I'm trying to run this demo on my 500 and 1200 http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=54337
(the download is an amiga executable file)

But on both machines I get strange vertical artifacts on the scrolling text- blue bars that extend from the text off the top of the screen. Kinda like puppet strings controlling the text. As you can see from the screenshot this isn't supposed to happen.

Yet in WinUAE with the same RAM and kickstart versions as my real Amigas it works perfectly. I've tried all sorts of settings and haven't been able to replicate the graphical artifacts in WinUAE.

Any ideas how I can make this work on a real system? I'd be interested to see results from others that try it on their real machines. :)

Sounds like a sprite issue... Possibly the overscan settings interfere with sprite DMA and distort the display. Try if the demo responds to your overscan settings; set those to standard and center the screen. If that doesn't change anything the demo may not be intended / tested for real hardware.

Where can I change overscan settings? I was running it off a boot disk, not from workbench.

That pretty much rules out overscan settings - since the demo is from '89 it's not developed for emulation either. Have you tried switching NTSC vs. PAL?

Yep, switching to NTSC mode on my 1200 just makes it go faster, doesn't fix the corruption.

Anything else I should look at? Should I try running it under workbench and fiddling with some settings?

Is that a DOS disk? Then you can try renaming DF0:devs/system-configuration so overscan falls back to default. Possibly someone messed that up (not really likely though...).

It's just a disk I formatted and made bootable with the INSTALL command then copied a few demo files over. I don't think there's anything under DEVS.

Yeah you've got the same problem as I do (those vertical lines above the scroll text)

So maybe its just badly written... bit strange that I get the same result on both a 500 and a 1200, would have thought one of them would work... oh well

Not real impressive anyway. I could write a better demo in COBOL.

try this one :)
