Fresh installs of OS 3.1 and 3.9 on A1200
« on: July 23, 2011, 05:52:24 AM »
When I got my A1200, it was "preconfigured," and I really don't know what was installed beyond the obvious. Now that I got my subway card in there, giving me an easy way to transfer files, I was thinking of wiping the CF card and installing from scratch 2 partitions: one for 3.9, and one for 3.1. My question to you all is this: I don't know beyond the very basics what I should be installing to get the best use out of each OS. What additional software should I get, what patches, fixes, and whatnot. Some assistance to point me in the right direction would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately that's a huge proposition these days.  There are no end to the patches that need to be hacked on.

My best suggestion is to use WinUAE to install ClassicWB on the card.  That way it's 99% preconfigured for you.

For OS3.9, installing Boing Bags #1-#4 will provide most of the necessary patches and fixes.

Its worth noting that the boing bags may or may not break your system in interesting ways. Certainly did for me.Proceed with caution.. or patience :)

I'm familiar with the Boing Bags, and I planned on at least using the 2 official ones. Not so sure about the 2 unofficial ones. That pretty much takes care of the 3.9 side, but not the 3.1 side. I know about the classic workbench, but how am I going to learn more if I just use something prepackaged, to be honest.

I also wonder about software that I should have. I know about some things that are necessary (MUI) or useful (ToolsDaemon) but again, more knowledge is most appreciated. For example, I've never used DOpus; it it really that big of a deal?

Dopus makes copying and moving files around a lot easier for sure. Definately a keeper.

For 3.1 installs you might consider using Gulliver's BetterWB.

id recommend adding these things one at a time. Otherwise it gets hard to keep track, if you apply 4 or 5 things, then suddenly have an unstable system

No doubt.

I've got a bunch of folders on another drive with copies of the SYS: partition after each thing I install.

For example, I installed Poseidon onto a ClassicWB 3.9 install the other day and it completely blew up, wouldn't boot with startup-sequence.

It took me forever to find that the input device line was added in the wrong place in the startup-sequence (above the comments at the top!) since ClassicWB didn't have the particular line Poseidon was looking for.

The backup saved the day on that one.

I'll make sure to have the OS backed up, as to avoid such problems.
A lot of data for me to go through. I have more research to do, it seems.
Thanks for your help.
I'll still take more suggestions, if anyone has any.
