Price/Advice on A3000/A4000 (T)?
« on: July 19, 2011, 08:35:00 PM »
I am contemplating getting an A3000 or A4000 to run the BBS on.  The SAM is nice, but still has issues with doorgames :(  I have an A1200, but I don't care for it much, I always liked the big box Amiga's better.

I am leaning towards another A3000 due to the built in scandoubler, but I'm not a big fan of SCSI anymore.  What's an easy solution to add IDE to an A3000?

A4000 I always liked, but I really want to keep costs minimal and avoid having to buy anything other than a used NIC for it, so I'd need a scandoubler/flickerfixer for an A4000.  A4000 IDE is a plus, though.

What's the going rate for a base model '030 A3000/A4000 with a bit of memory expansion on it - anyone got one that needs a good home going cheap in North America?  I don't need anything fancy.

I've found both an a3k and a4k for around $300+sh.

An ethernet card typically runs around another $100 or so, based on my experience.  The ariadne is my favorite so far.

The a3k is pretty beneficial if you don't need a graphics card but just want the scan doubled.  However, I'm in the same boat as you regarding IDE.  I will say that a fastata mk v works well in an a3k and can be had new from elbox, as opposed to trying to find a scandoubler/flicker fixer for the a4k (you'll probably be stuck getting something used).  So, that's my $.02...the a3k should be fine for bbsing.  I have run amiga express on an a3k with no issues.

Another note...what bbs?  :)  And what software?

I can offer a good price on a less than optimal condition 4000T!  I wouldn't hesitate to run a BBS on it though.

PM me if interested.

Currently running Zeus BBS on a SAM 440ep/OS 4.1u2 combo, just flushing out the last few niggling bugs before I put it back up publically.

I'm working on porting DLG BB/OS from the old 68k legacy code to PPC/OS 4.1, but it's been real slow going with my limited coding knowledge.

I've got some if you're willing to pick up.  I'm in San Antonio.

I just don't ever want to ship one again, what a nightmare.

I run a pc/linux bbs.  It's daydream, and was once a big contender on Amiga.  The original Amiga version was ported to linux in c for version 2.0.

I am also the current maintainer of the software, as it turns out.  I'm doing a lot of bugfixes and adding some features.  If you're curious, telnet to montereybbs.com :)
