Score! A3000t
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:48:15 PM »
So a buddy stops by the shop that I havn't seen for a few years and he spots my A1200 sitting in the back room and says he has some sort of Amiga at his house that I can have if I want it. So we go out to his place and there in a dark corner of his garage floor sets an Amiga A300T-040. It's HUGE and heavy! I move some crap outta the way and turn around to the back. Yup, a toaster system. 4 rows of BNC connectors. We take it down to his basement and open it up. Damn! A rats nest! We both grab that thing out at the same time. Looks pretty bleak in there. So I put it in the car and bring it back to the shop. Thanks Ted!

So today I get the motherboard out and the battery hasn't done hardly any damage at all. The 4 rows of BNC connectors are a Toaster 4000 board, an RS425 board, two RS232 board, and some sort of video board (I think) with two BNC connectors. I pull all the boards and between two of the comms boards was the rats nest. One of those boards is going to take some serious cleaning! The Toaster board looks OK but is dirty. The 040 board is in great condition too. I really don't even know what the comms boards do. Maybe a remote head unit for the Toaster system? There's a dongle on the back that says AmiLink on it. Someone has taken all the Toaster drives out and left just the OS drive. The optical drive is gone too.

I pulled the battery and cleaned around it and pulled the PSU out and set up everything on the bench. I hooked up the motherboard & PSU and the Drive. Everything powers up but all I get is a black screen. The monitor knows there's a signal there but no video. I see that there's a cylinder for what looks like a key. Like a Lock. The cylinder core is missing as is any wiring that may have been connected to it. I read that the 3000T key must be turned on to power on the unit. Beats me. Since the wiring is missing is there a jumper on the board that would simulate the key being turned "on"? There's a dummy connector on the 15KHz video so I assume I can connect an LCD display to the 31KHz connector? There's also a "disable" switch back there. Anyway that's where I'm stuck. Any help much appreciated. Nuts to furniture!!!

The case and front bezel is in excellecnt condition. Here's some pics...

Nice find!!

I must admit I've had nothing but trouble with my A3000 and it's bloody SCSI hard disk quirks.  Basically given up on it.

Good luck though mate!!  :)

Nice score! A bit hard to tell, but are the traces damaged around C113 where the battery was? kind of looks like it in the picture(this needs fixing first if so).I  see green corrosion on the resistor in that are as well as a IC.If its not damaged first thing i recommend is check voltages (+5 and +12) with the psu hooked to the board and power it up with the 3640 attached.if voltages are ok, shut it down and remove and reinstall every chip, look for any corrosion on pins or socket. Don't just push on this chips,it does no good, and use a proper plcc puller, the sockets are delicate-DONT TAKE SHORTCUTS! The missing key switch stuff wont matter, it just had a reset in it when you turned the key full and a kbd lock,it will run fine without that.
Carefully pull each zip ram chip and reinstall, again looking for any corrosion on the pins etc. half the chip ram zips is usuall socketed and all the fast ram zips.
you can use vga on the 15pin connector out the back with the switch on,if no video there i would hook a 1084s up or some such to the 23 pin port. hopefully it powers up by now. If not check the 3640 well, capacitors leaking can cause a eaten trace on it as well, sometimes under one of the capacitors.

Hopefully the above gives you something to work from.

Thanks Mechy for the advice! Well, all the suspect traces go to a non-existant U101 / 68882 chip. I pulled all the socketed IC's (I have the proper puller) and reseated. No change. All the usual IC's get to operating temp to the touch, even on the CPU board. There is however, a suspect cap C106 on the A6340 and there is a bit of white corrosion up in the 6340 connector. I'm sure the CPU board can be repaired if there's no IC damage. My friend told me that he never opened the unit and when I went to remove the CPU board it was barely on there which makes me think that someone at one time had messed with it. I'm calling A6340 board on this one. Which means I'm not going to spend the money to troubleshoot with spare boards. I know this is kind of a rare find but just don't need the hassel. There's some excellent IC's on this 3000T or could be repaired I'm sure. Anyone want to trade anything for it? I'd ship if worth my time to someone in the States or if in the GR Mich area I'll even just give it to you. But, I don't have the room to keep it hanging around. I'll keep it around for a week or so but if no one wants it I'll probably pull the chips and pitch it. Hell, there might even be a Super Denise on it. It's fully populated with zip ram too. Bet the 040 chip is good too. The case is great too. Sooooo, lemme know if anyone wants to trade or come and get for free.  :)

OK, what-cha got to trade? You're not gonna make me ship the case are you? Shipping would be a bank loan! PS - shipping cost is on you ya know.  :)

BTW, the MB & CPU are actually in beautiful condish. So I'll bet you can get her going - should be fun for you! And unless you already have an 3000T power supply you're gonna need that. Maybe an A2000 PSU will work? So must be shipped in two separate boxes unless you only want the boards. You can have the comms boards too (even the rat pooped on one). I'm gonna keep the Toaster 4000 card though PM me.       Rog.....

OK, got everyone's PMs. Mechy asked for the boards first. VingtTrois asked about the PSU and power swith which I'll have to find out if Mechy needs it first. desantii came in 3rd and will go to him last.

For a trade.... I like software. Some original Amiga software in the box. Doesn't matter - I like games too. But, If I had my choice it would be Amiga OS3.5 on CD with the Original box and manuals. :)

yep,i would like the complete machine if poss. they arent too bad to ship across the usa.the worst part is you may need a back brace!:roflmao:

To all wanting a 3000t PSU: its easy to fit a atx inside those, and it works fine. just set the tick jumper in the 3000 to get timing from video.sadly i need the original psu from gizmo so the machine is at least whole ...
