What ever happend to Holger Kruse?
« on: December 29, 2003, 02:19:25 AM »
Any one know where the Miami author disappeared to?
I would like to get a registered copy of miami, but from
everything I've heard that is not now possible.

I've been to his "Nordic Global" web site but it looks as if
it has not been updated in several years, and the registration
links no longer work. I don't see the use of keeping the site up
if there are no updates and the reg. links don't work.

When was the last time anyone in the Amiga community
 heard from him?

Thanks

Chuck

AFAIK, he went to work for REBOL and has pretty much vanished from the world of Amiga.  Don't think he's been heard from for quite a few years.  I believe it's impossible to register Miami any more.

Rumor has it that some troll took a post from the Miami mailinglist where he talked about how his stack was better than the Linux TCP stack, and crossposted it to a Linux mailinglist, drawing holy hell from the linux zealots and ultimately frustrating him enough to leave the scene.

Did I remember correctly?

This dilemma could be solved by first "obtaining" a copy out there,  then sending Holger his fee via snail mail etc.  He probably left that site up to protest the rampant copying of his keyfile and also to allow honest pirates to send him $$?
( I am not advocating piracy, am I?)

Now if I could just find someone willing to provide me with a Miami (or hopefully a Miami DX) KeyFile, I would be happy
to send Holger a registration fee, but I don't think that's
 going to happen.

I remember just before my original Amiga 3000D died in
1997,  I read a rant from him on some web site about all the
people stealing keyfiles, the rant was REALLY  extreame,
not that people stealing his work was cool or anything.

Thanx

I was in on some mail list conversations months back on this subject.
As far as I can tell Holger is
working with REBOL, and isn't accepting registrations of any kind.

This option was discussed also.
To keep a clear conciense you may possibly mail the registration fee by registered mail to Holgers Attention at REBOL. Either he accepts your payment possibly vaildating your pirated key, or he rejects it leaving you using your pirated key any way. :-?
Luckily I was able to register my 3.x key before he disappeared. I never did get DX, legit or pirated so I've never messed with those posibilities.

What ever happend to Holger Kruse?

He got a descent haircut, met a beautiful girl and lived happiley after ? ;-)

Now serious, AFAIK it all started with H&P claiming that 3.5 would contain an
unrestricted copy of Miami without having an agreement with him.

In the end it shipped completly without Miami (*), or just with the demo.

People got pissed at Holger over that (remeber that was a time before info became
so easily available as today), and felt they had the right to get their key in any way.

Holger introduced some hefty and controversy anti-piracy meassurs (pretty much
the same #### as later in WinXP), which offcourse had the same affect as all the old
copy-protection on games, pirates where even more motivated to crack and spread.

@lempkee
The only connection to the community of today that I know of is that he works for
Rebol, and that BBRV have asked Carl Sassenrath for a MOS-native Rebol. Wether
that will actually happen, and if it'll be done by Holger is beyond public knowledge.

(*)The very 1st batch of CDs sold on the Cologne-fair that year came completly
without Miami. That annoyed me so much that it became the starting for
pushing my A2000T more an more to the side, till I finally packed it away in
1999. Only to dust it off again in mid 2001, when I heard about the soon to
be released Amithlon.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Yes he is involved with rebol, but as far as getting a registration of miami good luck.  I had to redo my whole 1200 system a yr and a half ago and have always had a copy of miami and miami dx (originals i bought not pirated by the way).  When i first got miami like 5-6 yrs ago i think i had no probs registering it, but about a yr ago i tried to get another key file and never got it, neither could i or have been able to re-register.  I did find my original keyfile i had on a backup of my system, but im not giving it out:) cause that would make me a pirate of sorts.  anyways better off with netconnect or another tcp/ip program cause miami is pretty much dead in the water unfortunately.  I must admit tho it was the best out the and prob still one of the best if you can get a keyfile for your copy.
