GRAC2 information
« on: June 27, 2011, 05:53:48 AM »
I'm looking into GRAC2 to create an Amiga point and click.   I'm curious about what graphics formats it supports.  I gather is dpaint iff, but as in what?  I'm guessing it is limited to 32-colour low res OCS but I could be wrong.  Is this correct?  I'd like to try EHB is possible.

Are there other goof creators for the Amiga out there similar?  May AGA compatible?

Hey doc,

I looked into GRAC2 and GRAAL, and personally am going with GRAAL.  There are TONS more features and it is way better documented.

It's also free like GRAC2!

It's funny you should pop on about this time because a community group was made just a few days ago for us amateur game makers.  Also because I just got into it myself a few weeks ago and started down the same path you are going (seriously, I just e-mailed myself all the text files for GRAAL so I can read them during down time at work).

To answer your question, there is no AGA game maker that I know of.  They are all ECS/OCS only to date.  But GRAAL does offer Half-bright colors so you can do 64 instead of 32 and so may some of the others like "Backbone".  Search it out on Aminet, you won't be disappointed...

While I cant offer much help in regards to Grac/Graal Ive been checking out games made with them of late. They seem quite capable and some of the games are definately worth checking out.
As for alternatives there's also Inca, which supports not only aga, but rtg/rta as well, and isnt written in AMOS Pro  :)
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Oh wow, I think GRAAL is a better choice!  I'm going to take a look.  I'm wanting to really exploit Amiga graphics and sound as best I can.

I'll look at the community you mentioned.

If youre wanting to exploit the Amigas gfx and sound then I recommend Inga over graal/grac. Inga supports 640x512x256 gfx, supports ahi, cd music and so on.

I personally like the OCS/ECS 'Charm' over near SVGA stuff.  Even better if it were possble to copper-bar it as well.  Frankly if I can make some pretty 64 colour backdrops and a nice mod for music, I think that's beyond brilliant.

+1

I looked on Hall of Light, Lemon Amiga and Aminet but couldn't find even a mention of it.

GRAAL is looking cooler and cooler as I read the docs.  You can even make it a "talky" (add audio recordings instead of text), it'll do auto scaling for objects/characters that move into hte distance AND you can have four characters under your control at the same time!

Really REALLY cool!

@Motrucker+J-Golden

There used to be a website, but I cant find it right now. I'll keep looking though as it shows a few examples, and they look quite nice. I have it on my harddrive so if anyone is interested let me know (I I found a few references to it online that suggest it has been made freely available, even though it was a commercial product).

It appears I was mistaken, so far as I can tell there's no AGA support and it requires a gfx card. Still cant find anything more than vague references to it yet though (their website is gone). I was correct in that it has been made freely available though, so my offer to send it to anyone who's interested stands.

Ok, that makes sense.  I was looking for INCA which is how you spelled it in your first post, not INGA as you've been calling it since.

One letter can make a BIG difference! :)

As for your offer, I'd LOVE to get my hands on it even to look at it and see what it can do.  Do you know if it was a finished product?  The link you posted siad development had ended, but not at what stage...

Looks like it was given away in AF issue 81

Two things.

1) Got INGA (THANKS fishy_fiz!!!) and installed it and yes, it requires RTG and at least an 030.  It is also completely in German so even though I could start and play the demo game and open the docs on Amiga Forever, I didn't understand a word people were saying.

I also didn't hear any sound.  I don't know if that was an AF issue or there was no sound in the demo game to begin with.

2) Getting back to GRAC2.  I wanted to do some more looking into GRAC2 so I could make a Pro/Con comparison with GRAAL but other than running the editor, it flashes the screen and then a requestor box pops up with "Cannot open screen" and an "OKAY" button.

Again, I'm playing in a virtual environment with AF but I checked and all the native screen modes work so I don't know what could be causing the issue.

Any ideas why it doesn't run?
