Treasure in the DC area

LOL, I do a craigslist search for "Amiga" almost every day, and come up with nada.  Like hen's teeth in the DC area!  :(

I'm in the DC area and struck gold twice.  First time, browsing in a pawn shop, I saw an Amiga 2500 box, with no keyboard, mouse or cables.  The owner did not know what it was or what to do with it.  I traded him 3 obsoleted PC compatible computers which was given away from my office for it.  That made more sense to him.  Anyway, I brought the box home.  Besides the A2630 accelerator, it had the Commodore Scan Doubler card and a 8088 Bridgeboard in it.  Should have suspected it when I noticed it had a 5.25" floppy drive built in.  The hard drive was small, only 52 MB.  But the accelerator had 4 MB of RAM on it.

Second time, I saw an auction on EBay.  The guy was selling his A500 kit for 1 cent (buy it now).  He basically wanted to make space in his garage.  So I bit.  When I got there, I was glad I had a van.  That A500 was loaded to the gills: GVP A530 (8 MB RAM, 120 MB HD), ScanDoubler, 2 MB Chip RAM, 1.3/2.1 ROM Switcher, boxes of software and parts.  The parts included a second GVP A530 brand-new in box, a third GVP A530 parts only, a parts only A500, Commodore 1942 bi-sync monitor, a joystick, extra cables, extra 3.5" external drives, an extra scan-doubler, extra A500 keyboard and I still have not gone through all the boxes.

I did not have too much space myself, so I put an ad in craigslist and got rid of my Mac collection (mostly 680x0's and a couple early PowerPC's).  Made some Mac-head real happy.  But I was much happier with my expanded Amiga collection.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

I found my A4000D in the wrong section on eBay.  The guy was unable to test it because he didn't have a screen for it, so it was only guaranteed to power up.  He took the case off and snapped a few pics, and I was able to see that it had a 3640 and a Toaster 4k card :)  I got it for much less than what I would want for it.

That being said, I search craigslist daily also.  However, I search the entire US, not just local, and have convinced a guy to ship once.  I use google, and here's how I do it:

amiga june site:craigslist.org

That will search every craigslist.org for amiga, and show the june results.  They aren't the greatest and you have to wade through a bunch of crap but it works to a degree :)

Unfortunately Doommaster works the same Craigslist area I use.  He had an A3000 recently that he would have sold you for 1200 bucks or 600 bucks plus a 68060 accelerator for an A2000.

I have had some luck in Seattle with CL.  (just a hair outside of Doomy's territory LOL)  I have got a 1200 for $25.  A4000 and A2000 for free!  And other odds and ends for small change.  Got two A500's for free recently too.
Going Bananas over AMIGAs since 1987...

Looking for Fusion Fourty PNG ROMs V3.4?

@damiga. Pictures are forthcoming. Give me a few days.

I prefer not to reveal what I've spent, but lets say that I hunted around prices, and I considered the price fair for 3 stock A1200s, 3 stock A500s, and 1 68030 accellerator with some extra thrown in for the extra unidentified bits.

Great, can't wait to see pictures!

I respect that you don't want to reveal the price, but I had to ask =)
I would probably be even more jealous if I found out how good the deal was =)

A nice story anyways. Best of luck with the hardware, hopefully everything works!

The A500 is like a Fabergé egg which until you crack open you will never appreciate the possible surprise. Whenever a 500 came up on Ebay that nobody bid on I would give it a go and couldn't wait to see if there was anything inside. Sometime ago the community here were having fun with an Ebay auction cus the boxed 500 for sale claimed to be an upgraded 1200. Anyway I said nothing but was suspiscious. I won the auction and when I got it home inside was a Viper like yours. Quite rare.

Any accelerator for a 500 is rare and should be well looked after. Personally I would try to look after it. The other items are valuable, but not rare. So well done. I tried very much to collect gear cus I would always come back with more.

Like this lot that I got from winning an auction for a Checkmate. Scroll down the list to items listed from 5th June 2004 called my Wonderwall

The Checkmate

Just wish I had the space to collect more.

Anyway .. Well done. Safe hands I hope. Gear like this needs safe hands.

@scuzzb494 That is a most impressive collection, and the wonderwall especially so.

I hope I'm safe hands, if I can't use anything, I'll endeavour to find homes for them that can. The Viper is one of the more exciting bits to me, as I still have one of (if not my) first A500's, and it would be very happy with an 020, and from the little I've read about the Viper, it seems like one of the 020's you'd most want to have.

I love living in an Amiga Aladdin's cave. When I first got my Amiga there was a computer shop here dedicated to the Amiga and the guys in there were Amiga nutters. Every lunchtime I would go in there and they would show me new goodies and it was quite magical. I don't have the joy of seeing new stuff but I have an Amiga wonderland to play in every day and I gotta say it really isas  magical. Dunno what modern computer kit would generate as much lasting pleasure.

Good to collect... Just wish I could cram more stuff in. Keep up the good work and always have fun.

I would suggest the Viper is probably one of the single most important finds you will ever make. I just sat there with this big grin on my face for like ever when I found mine. I still have the boxed 500 in pride of place here. I mean when you just look at the slender build and then marvel how it ever fitted inside the 500. No other computer can boast such dedicated users. And finding any treasure in a 500 is truly wonderful. Trust me when I say, they are rare. Any accelerator for the 500 is rare and I do truly hope that you make sure it finds a glass case at some point. Cus in years to come they will celebrate the unique nature of the Amiga range of computers and collectors will pay a fortune for such things. This was the birth of everything to come in the world of micro technology, and you have  such a valuable part of that. Safe hands are needed whilst it stays with you. Well done.
